Willow awoke from a peaceful slumber to the sound of birds greeting the dawn outside her window. It was the morning after their little excursion in the ancient king’s crypt and she was glad to be sleeping in the peace of an Inn once more as opposed to a cold dungeon floor. She stretched and yawned in satisfaction as she climbed out of bed. The sun was just showing its bright face over the horizon. She had slept in later then usual and because of that her stomach was already growling. Willow slipped into her clothes then made her way to the common room for breakfast.

She scanned the room to see if any of her companions might be around but they were either on to whatever work they had for the day or still asleep. Willow noticed the addled cleric was still where they had left him the night before, asleep at his table. She wished him mercy from the headache he would surely have after such a long time spent at his drink. Hopefully they could soon help him with his troubles but she hoped that until then he would stay away from the ale. Sir Trueblade would keep an eye out for him every now and then Willow was sure, but Rodrick on the other hand… He seemed to encourage the idea of wallowing in drunkenness when things got tough (or any other time for that matter). Willow hoped that Rodrick would stay away from the poor cleric, Tunaster.

Willow smiled. She was rather pleased that Sir Trueblade agreed with her on some things. Though his strategy in battle frustrated her she knew that he was a good man and that he stood for the right things. Faerun could use a few more men like him, though perhaps with a little more sense.

As she was thinking about the knight the memory of hitting him square in the jaw the day before flashed across Willow’s mind. The ranger’s hand smacked her forehead as she realized she had not yet apologized to Sir Trueblade for attacking him in the crypt. She had not meant to, it just happened. He needed to know that she meant him no harm. Willow wondered where she could find him, not seeing him in the common room when she entered it. Maybe the inn keeper could tell her where he had last seen the knight.

Willow walked up to the inn keeper and politely cleared her throat.
“Pardon me,” she asked, “have you seen the knight, Sir Trueblade this morning?”

Bluestich, 27th of Eleasius-An Apology Empty Sir Tobias Trueblade

Post  Colin Marcus Sun Jun 06, 2010 10:49 pm

Sir Tobias had been up since the dawn. Seeing the sad state of the Cleric weighed heavy on the soul of knight. To see a man sink so far into despair... it confused the knight. The man had given up. Having been wronged by his society and associates... instead of standing true, he fell into a bottle.

Utterly shameful.

Less shameful was the condition of Steed. They had been gone for two days, and Tobias knew not whether it was the innkeeper of a stablehand of some sort, but the mule was taken excellent care of.

Still the knight considered his noble beast his own responsibility and between the mist and the unexpectant journey through the tomb, he knew he'd been remiss in his duties to the great animal. Having spent the morning brushing Steed, he looked like a brand new donkey.

The inn keeper turned to see the young woman standing before him. She was asking him the whereabouts of the gallant knight, Sir Trueblade.

“Well, I did see him through here a little while ago,” the inn keeper replied. “I do believe he was last seen out yonder seeing to his donkey.”

“Thank you,” Willow smiled at the inn keeper. “That is just what I needed to know!” She nodded her head toward the man as a sign of farewell then headed to exit the Cornet and Cabbage’s stables. She was certain to find Sir Trueblade there.

Sure enough, right outside the stable door Sir Trueblade stood next to his donkey. He seemed to have just finished grooming his mount and the animal’s grey cloak shone like silver in the light of the rising sun. Willow had never known of a knight who rode a donkey before meeting Sir Trueblade. In fact, she had not thought the donkey to be much of a noble steed for knights to ride on since mighty war horses were more commonly used and accepted as such. When she first saw Sir Trueblade riding his donkey she found the sight quite comical, very much opposing the term “noble”. But now, with the wonderful grooming and care he had just received and the way his coat shone in the sun Willow realized that this very simple beast of burden was indeed noble. His nobility was a result of the care of his master and that indeed was a noble thing.

“Sir Trueblade,” Willow called to the knight as she walked toward him. “Might I have a moment of your time?”

The knight snapped to attention as he heard his name called. The young woman he knew as 'Willow the Wanderer' had sought him out. The young lady confused him on multiple levels. She seemed almost obsessed with history and the past yet spoke little of her own. He knew in his heart she was not evil, yet had sided with the evil king under the tombs... She had seemed inclined to let the half-elven woman go free, regardless of her culpability in the death and looting of the tomb. Then of course there was her insistence to help the drunken sod from last night. A very confusing woman, the knight wasn't sure what to make of her... But the same could be said of most of his companions.

"Lady Willow!" Tobias greeted her calmly. Carefully placing the brush back on the stool he had found he turned to face and bowed his head respectfully. "How may I be of service this day?"

Always the picture of utter politeness was Sir Trueblade. He was a great knight only because he was a great servant. I believe service is his strength, thought Willow as she came to a stop a few feet away from steed.

“Yes,” the ranger spoke resolutely, “I came to speak to you for a purpose and the purpose is this. I wish to apologize for attacking you in the crypt.” Willow’s eyes fell on the spot where she had hit him in the jaw. Thanks to their healer, Glanin there was no bruise. She only hoped the memory could be healed as well.

Willow hung her head. “You see, I have reason to believe I was under someone else’s control during that fight against the ancient evil usurper.” The ranger looked the knight in the eyes once more.

“I had every intention of smiting his evil body into smithereens when I suddenly had the urge to hit you. It was such an urge that I could not refuse even though I wanted to do no such thing. It must have been something the evil king said as I vaguely remember him speaking to me right before I attacked you. Thankfully my weapons slipped out of my hand or I would have given you a mighty gash. If Glanin had not persuaded me to go after my blades I fear I would have kept hitting you until I could do so no more.

“Sir Trueblade, I did not wish to attack you. I tried to stop myself but I had lost control of my body. I know what I say does not seem to make much sense but please know that I am telling you the truth. I apologize for any harm I did to you while in such a bewildering state and I hope that I can prevent it from ever happening again.”

The ranger shifted her balance from one foot to the other as she awaited Sir Trueblade’s response.

Sir Tobias rubbed his jaw where she had hit him the day prior. He'd been shocked at the time, not just because of the blow... but from the power of it. The young lady was deceptively strong and he could scarcely remember a time when he was last punched so hard.

"I admit, I was concerned about the sudden attack... With our difference in opinion regarding the innocence of the half-elven lady, I feared I may have offended you in some way. Though I don't see what I could have done to cause you to switch allegiances so drastically.

"I admit I know all of you very little... but your actions then seemed out of the character for the good and true person I believe you to be." He smiled a bright smile then. "If it as you say, and some dark power coerced you into striking me... Then any apology is wholeheartedly accepted and should trouble you no more."

Willow let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Sir Trueblade. Your willing acceptance of my apology puts me at ease again."

The ranger chuckled at the knights brilliant smile. She might be persuaded to think him handsome were his methods less unorthodox. His strong ideals were very strange to Willow who was used to making decisions based more on common sense. Willow still had a hard time figuring him out. One thing she knew for sure, when it came to doing the just and right thing Sir Trueblade was as straight as a board.

Willow hopped up on to the hitching rail next to the stable. She looked inquiringly over at Sir Trueblade. "Does it bother you that we do not agree about the Lyra?" Willow questioned him.

"I for one, do not think she is guilty of murder just by her association with the hobgoblins who killed that poor family. Whatever crime she may have committed by joining up with that troop of grave robbers I believe she had long repented of it when we got to her. She bore no malice toward anyone save maybe the evil mage who signed her on and she had done no harm to anyone while she was part of the expedition. She only went because a friend had persuaded her and because she sought a greater knowledge of those who had passed before her. I cannot fault her for that.

"No, I am not angry, nor ever was angry at your desire to turn her in. Your mind, once made up is strong and I have not the skills to change it nor the desire (at the moment). You want to see justice done, and so do I. What that means to us may be two different things, I do not know. I do know that I shall be quite angry and disappointed if the Purple Dragons do not try Lyra fairly. She should be given a chance to prove her innocence and not be made to suffer for crimes she did not commit."

Willow swung her feet back and forth as she paused. "What say you, Sir Knight?" she smiled. "Do you agree with my words?"

The knight quietly absorbed her words. He tried to see things from her point of view... but found it difficult. "Lady Willow..." he began cautiously. "I believe that everyone should be held accountable for their own actions. The lady Lyra... She had committed wrongs in her search for knowledge. She knowingly entered the hallowed halls of the dead with those intent to loot and pillage. She willing traveled with Hobgoblins and one who reanimated the dead. Despite her personal goals... Somehow she must have KNOWN that she was in the wrong."

Tobias raised his eyebrows to forestall any debate. "That said... I too do not believe her guilty of murder. I do not believe she was evil in heart, but her actions... if they were not evil themselves, helped to encourage and enable the evil surrounding her. I have no doubt that she must stand trial for her part in the tragedy that occurred. I too will do all I can to see that the trial is fair and honorable... and in my own heart I hope her part is deemed small enough that her punishment is slight. However, that is not for me to decide. This kingdom has it's laws and she will be held accountable by them."

He stared at her quizzically for a moment. "I confess... It is strange for me to travel with others. Most of my travels have simply been me and Steed and he tends to keep his opinions to himself." The tone of his voice left some doubt whether the knight had actually made a joke or not. "Most of the people I encounter fall into one of three categories. Evil... Those who unerringly destroy Evil without compromise... and those too weak to stand up against Evil.

"I know your not weak... and I know your not evil... but I must admit I've never debated what is 'right' and what is 'wrong' before... It's 'peculiar' to say the least..."

Sir Trueblade spoke of never traveling with anyone other then himself. This was something they had in common. Willow had never been interested in traveling with anyone else until recently. She had been to focused on her own goals and it was much easier for her to travel alone and not have to worry about anyone other then herself.

But now... Now things were different. The six of them (including the beloved Tressym) were about to have a charter declaring them to be an official adventuring group. Six strangers who knew nothing about each other except the fact that they can survive a few good fights. Willow was not sure what she had gotten herself into, all she knew was the fact that traveling with others was harder then traveling alone. It would take some getting used to...

Sir Tobias Trueblade wrote: "Most of the people I encounter fall into one of three categories. Evil... Those who unerringly destroy Evil without compromise... and those too weak to stand up against Evil.

"I know your not weak... and I know your not evil... but I must admit I've never debated what is 'right' and what is 'wrong' before... It's 'peculiar' to say the least..."

Willow grinned at the knight. "I see we are back to my first question, then. Does it bother you that we disagree?"

"Actually..." the knight corrected with a lopsided grin of his own. "Your first question was if you could have a moment of my time... This one came later!" He chuckled at his own attempt at humor.

"I make no apologies for my quest, and I hope you and the others can accept that. If I see a wrong that needs righting, I will be there with sword and shield ready. As a group... or by myself, it makes no difference to a knight of the realm. If you disagree with my actions... I will be disappointed and most likely confused... but your actions will not change my actions... nor my opinion of your company.

"However..." He said while rubbing his jaw. "I do hope we can keep our a differences from coming to blows..."

Willow hopped off the hitching rail and landed in a half crouched position as she held her fists up in front of her face as if she were ready for a fight. Mischief gleamed in her eyes as she grinned at Sir Trueblade.

"What?" the ranger asked mockingly. "You're not afraid that I could take you in a fight, are you?"

She shuffled her feet around in the dirt as she bounced around throwing a few poorly executed punches in the knight's direction. She hoped that Sir Trueblade saw the absurdity of it all as she danced around looking like a fool. Willow let out a chuckle as she straightened back into a standing position. "No, Sir Trueblade," she laughed, "I have no reason to believe our disagreements will ever come to blows. Not if I can help it, anyway." She sighed happily as she hopped back onto her perch on the rail.

"Sir Trueblade, if I may ask a more personal question..." Willow cocked her head inquisitively. "How did you come to be a knight of the realms?"

Bluestich, 27th of Eleasius-An Apology Empty Sir Tobias Trueblade

Post  Colin Marcus Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:42 am

The knight stared with eye's wide in shocked bewilderment, as the ranger danced around him in some kind of mock battle stance. His eyes followed as she darted back and forth and as she started laughing, he slowly joined in. As her last question hit him the knight fell silent and introspective. The question puzzled him. He wasn't sure how to answer...

"How did I 'become' a knight of the realm?" he repeated carefully to make certain he had it right. Seeing her nod, he again considered the question.

"Milady...." he began with confusion in his voice. "One does not 'become' a knight of the realm... He simply is, or he is not." His voice grew to it's customary boldness as he continued his explanation. "Everyone you meet, is who he is... and is what he is. What others believe or say, changes not what is in a person's heart. THAT is where true Nobility lies." He reached out and patted Steed's neck for an obvious example.

"Each must find their own path and follow as their heart dictates... who or what they are. Not everyone has it in them to strap on the armor of righteousness and face down the forces of evil. Those that do.... the ones with steel in their veins and gold in their hearts... Those men... and women of course... are knights of the realm. I consider myself honored to be numbered amongst them, and I hope only that I never bring shame or disgrace to the title."

Bluestich, 27th of Eleasius-An Apology Empty Willow

Post  TRU Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:46 am

The ranger let the knight’s words soak into her mind. There were times when the things Sir Trueblade said where so eloquent and inspiring that they made Willow want to believe everything in the world would someday be right again. For the foolhardy fighter that he was Sir Trueblade was always sure of himself and this confidence showed as he spoke.

Willow sat and ruminated on the knight’s words silently for a moment. Sir Trueblade spoke as if knighthood was something born in a person as apposed to something they attained. This information did not quite line up with the way Willow had learned things from Sir Rainsworth. He had told her that knights became so because a king granted that position to them. But some how Sir Trueblade’s words made some sense. Not all who were knighted were truly knights in their heart. Willow had seen a prime example of this in the depictions of the dark haired knight in the crypt. He had been knighted by the good and ancient king and had even fought beside that king against many evils. And yet in the end the black haired knight had turned on his king and, with every evil intention in his heart he took the kingdom for his own. By Sir Trueblade’s standards the black haired knight hadn’t been much of a knight at all. Willow had to agree with him there.

“Your words,” Willow said slowly as she swung her legs under the hitching rail, “they make some sense to me. I believe I understand how one just “is” a knight. Being a knight is something that truly comes from the heart, I think.

“But…” Willow paused for a second before going further, “did no one instruct you in anything? How to fight with a sword? How to ride? How to brush your donkey in such a way to make him shine so?” She gestured toward the knight’s noble steed.
“Surely you didn’t know all of this automatically?”

If Sir Trueblade told her that he didn’t need to be taught anything, that somehow he just intrinsically knew it all, Willow would be crestfallen. If this were to be true, Willow thought, then there is something really wrong with me.

Bluestich, 27th of Eleasius-An Apology Empty Sir Tobias Trueblade

Post  Colin Marcus Wed Jun 23, 2010 3:02 am

"I do confess..." the knight answered cautiously. "I have had many instructor's on the art of war. I attempt to learn from everyone I encounter. Everyone I join forces with... or against, have taught me ways to keep myself alive that much longer. Everyone has SOMETHING you can come away with. Whether it's from an evil dark warrior, or a local stableboy."

His face scrunched up as he thought back to the past. "I do not credit one particular teacher above the others... Some things DO come naturally, as if I were born to do them... Some require constant training." His face relaxed and he gave her another grin. "I seem to remember it took a VERY long time to learn to assemble my armor!

"If there is something that you TRULY want to be a PART of you... Constant training is a small price to pay. Such Vigilance keeps you in the fight... for as long as possible."

The knight's smile slipped a bit after that comment. "On that point, Lady Willow... Though I have not the right, I would ask a favor of you."

He reached down and drew forth his new sword. He twisted it so the early morning light struck the unblemished silver hued blade. Anyone could tell the knight was in Awe of the weapon. The soft ivory leather felt awkward in his hands and he rested the blade point down into the soft ground of the stable. He rested one hand on the gold and mithril gilded crossguard and the other on the pearl of the pommel.

"Merthuvial... The Kingmaker." he stated simply. "The Forgotten King of the Forgotten Kingdom bequeathed me this sword, because he deemed me somehow worthy." There was no arrogance in the knights words, only a deep humility. "I am a knight. I am not a king. This sword was given to me to be a force for good in this world, and I hope I can do it justice."

He took a deep breath as if the next words were almost painful to admit. "I believe that in the end good will triumpth and evil will be destroyed. However it may not be in my lifetime. Knights rarely see old age. I will fight as long as my heart beats... but should I fall, I beseech you to find another in my stead to wield so mighty a weapon."

His face hardened in stoic resolve as he continued on. "Merthuvial has been lost and forgotten for centuries. Locked in a tomb with a fallen warrior. Though it is customary for a knight to be entombed with his armor, sword, and shield... I would not have it so. Keep the sword until you find someone you believe will be able to put it such use as I was unable to... Someone with the heart and dedication of a knight of the realms."

Willow let out a small sigh of relief. The fact that the knight had to learn so many things gave her that much more hope that she was normal. She had learned so much in the past ten years, some of which came easy and some of it was very hard. The more she knew, the more she found was a mystery to her.

As for training, Willow needed to do more of that. Maybe she should ask Sir Trueblade if he wouldn't mind training with her as time goes on. She needed someone to help her keep her skills sharp.

The ranger cocked her head at Sir Trueblade’s query for a favor. He pulled out Merthuvial, The King Maker: the sword given to him in the crypt. It was a beautiful blade, and special, not only to the knight, but to Willow as well. She had some mysterious tie to its ancient name; a tie she hoped would be a key to unlocking her memories.

“Yes, Sir Trueblade,” the ranger replied, “I will see to it that The King Maker is put into good hands when you are gone. I am honored that you have chosen me to carry out such a favor for you. I know there must be someone who could do the job better then I could but I will do better then my best to see to it that your will is carried out for the sword. You have my word.”

Willow smiled slightly as a humorous thought crossed her mind.

“I mean no impertinence,” she said with a twinkle in her eye, “but I believe your life length expectancy might improve greatly if you changed your tactics a bit.”

She laughed at the quizzical look on Sir Trueblade’s face.

“I’m just saying that there may be times when quietly stalking ones enemy may be better to give one an upper hand then all out chasing after them with so much fervor.”

Willow smiled as the image of Sir Trueblade running after the noises in the mist at Smuggler’s Stone came to mind. Quiet and careful were not good words to use when describing Sir Trueblade’s fighting style.

The knight raised his eyebrows in surprise. Then he chuckled silently.

"We all have skills and talents M'lady. Skulking in shadows like a rogue is not one of mine. A knight's armor is not designed for silent shadow work. It's designed to be a shining beacon of hope for all to see. Steadfast and true, standing face to face and blade to blade against the forces of evil."

His eyes took on a far away look. "No, even if I COULD skulk, I never would. It's not who I am... nor who I choose to be. Everyone has to be true to what they WANT to be! Choose your ideals and try your best to live up to them... I choose to face my enemies with courage and honor, regardless of the cost.

"Death holds no fear for me, Lady Willow." His voice took on a wistful tone. "We will meet soon enough. My only hope is that when it does come... I will have made a difference in this world. That I thwarted the forces of evil, if just a little... and that the world is a better place for my having fought in it."

Willow slid down the rail to put her hand on the knight’s shoulder. He was so grave when talking about his own death. It was as if death had looked Sir Trueblade in the eyes and told him that he was coming for him. Willow sat silent for a moment. How quickly one could pass from life to death. Surely the knight had a few good years left in him. But who knew what was to happen on the morrow…

Willow sighed as she curled her left foot around the post at the end of the hitching rail.
“Death will come soon enough for all of us, Sir Trueblade, but surely not today. ‘Let us keep our heads on our shoulders and our eyes on the horizon,’ as my old lord and master used to say.” She hopped off the hitching rail and landed on the ground next to the knight’s steed. “What say you we improve our chances of living longer this day by sparing together before we break our fast?”

Willow grinned up at the knight hoping he would accept her invitation.
