Lines on Ale

by Edgar Allen Poe

Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today.

------

It had been far too long since she'd had a proper drink. Saedda would have preferred a proper library, but there was nothing to be done for that here!

Bluestitch didn't have much going for it...their claim to fame was a graveyard of all things! Granted it had been recently proven to be truly ancient burial site, but still... A GRAVEYARD!?! One thing she had to admit, was that the farmers here could brew a respectable ale, and she had every intention of taking advantage of that this evening.

A strange pastime for a wizard perhaps, or at least that what most wizards would have you believe during those off hours when they're NOT in their cups, but one does not spend years aboard a sailing vessel without picking up some modicum of ability to hold one's liquor.

Up in her room, amid the grandeur of the Coronet and Cabbage, the air genasi pulled out the silver clasp that held her hair in place and shook out the blue tresses to fall past her shoulders. Tonight was a night of simple leisure. Tomorrow they would be heading off to Wheloon once again, this time with the forge-filthy dwarf in tow, to check out this 'ceremony' held at the newly built temple to Mystra.

Saedda couldn't bring herself to trust this Shanthar...the priest of Mystra that had greeted them with such gracious charm... Anyone who could make promises to solve all the mysteries that her companions might have, was most likely exactly what he seemed. Too good to be true. Still, they'd go to this ceremony of that she was sure, and if it wasn't a trap, than at least she might be able to purchase a few spells while she was there. Solve a mystery, smite some priests claiming to be followers of the Mother of All Magic, or learn a bit of new magic herself... Nope, Saedda couldn't find a downside to any of it!

Thoughts for tomorrow.

Snatching up her wide-brimmed hat, she ran her hand down the ostentatious green feather before placing on her head and cocking it ever so slightly to the side so the edge almost covered her left eye. With that, she headed down the stairs toward the common room.

She was used to collecting the sideways glances from those who weren't familiar with her kind. Not that any would find her particularly beautiful, but it was obvious to most that there was something slightly different about her. Whether it was the slight breeze that always seemed to surround her even in enclosed areas, or her bright blue hair and eyes coupled with pale skin, Saedda actually found that she enjoyed the feeling of being 'exotic'. In Calimport, genasi, while not common were understood nearly as well as elves by the natives.

Calimport...

She shook the horrific images from her head, causing the breeze dancing about her to whistle slightly.

More thoughts for tomorrow. Tonight would be only ale.

Across the common room, Saedda spied one of the few men in town that might garner more odd looks than herself! Rodrick's thick mane of ever-changing hair (magenta at the moment) stood out amid the crowd of simple farmers and tradesmen.

With her hand resting comfortably on the hilt of her peace-bound rapier, and a wide smile adorning her face, the wizard sauntered over to the half elf's table and bowed low.

"Good evening, Rodrick! Might I join you for an ale or three? I have a few spare brain cells that I intend to try and pickle tonight, and I do so hate to drink alone!"

Rodrick looked up at Saedda's words. Then Standing he beseeched her to sit with a florish and bow fit for the King himself.

"I would of course be honored to have you share my table. Luckily for you this is but my first for the evening.

Then with a glare directed at the bartender he continued.

"Damn fool said I had to wear a shirt in order to be served. of course he never said it had to be closed or have sleeves so i just grabed my fencing tunic and leave it unbuttoned. If my apppearance is unacceptable to you I can easily change it to suit you better. I do kinda like the sideways glaces I get though.

With that he laughed and order a round for the both of them.

"If only they knew who they were staring at in disgust. It would send them yammering away. Luckily for them I care nothing about such things.

"Now then where do we take this conversation? I leave the choice of topics to you."

"Make that two for me," she called out to the wench Rodrick had just ordered from, "I have some catching up to do!"

Saedda smiled and tipped her hat to the half elf as she took a seat, stretching out her legs on the seat next to her, and crossing the big, black boots at the ankle.

"The way you have been required to dress certainly doesn't offend me in the slightest! I've spend much time among sailors if you recall, where dress codes are slightly more...lax... Actually, I think you've struck upon an amusing compromise." Grinning, the genasi shot a glance at the barkeep. "I must say, it's a shame that you're forced to cover so much of your art, but different establishments have different rules I suppose! Not all of which are worth discounting when the ale might be restricted..." she added, wide-eyed with a sweeping flourish of her hands. "One must have priorities!"

Without warning Saedda's smile slipped and she grew suddenly serious. "As to where we might take this conversation... Well... I suggest we first take it to the bottom of a foaming mug and then perhaps see where it might evolve from there!"

The stony facade cracked into a half smile, and spying the local wench trotting over with the three ales, she clapped and thanked the woman. Taking up the mug, she took a long swig. Saedda sighed happily and wiped the foam from her to lip with the back of her hand.

"Better." she concluded happily.

"Now! What say we start with the topic of travel! If I may be so bold, where is it that you began and where have you been between there and Bluestitch?"

Saedda pushed the brim of her hat up a bit so she could use both eyes to study him.

"I'd imagine you've traveled quite extensively with your troop, and you have mentioned your parents before, but I don't recall from where you came."

She smiled and after a second pull on her ale, rested her chin on her clasped hands, listening intently.

"Travel? I have traveled through much of the continent though not with the side show. I have been as far North as the spine of the world seen almost all of the sword coast and even some of Sembia. I have been on my own since I was roughly 8 or so. As a result I have seen much. As to where I started I suppose you could say I started out in my Father's home in Waterdeep. After that I started out in the place his men so ungracefully dropped me and left.

Roderick then finished his ale and began to drink the fresh one the bar maid had just brought.

"And what of you from which port do you hale? Where have you been on your journeys?"

"Ahh, the City of Splendors," she sighed whimsically. "I've never had the pleasure of visiting Waterdeep, though I do hope to someday."

Saedda's eye lost their focus for a moment and she absent-mindedly leaned back in her chair, Levitating herself a tiny bit until she teetered precariously on the two back legs.

"I hail not from the City of Splendors, but the City of Slag, formerly known as Calimport of which I can only presume you've heard."

Righting herself, the genasi lifted the mug to her lips. "The city will rise again," she said mostly to herself after taking a long swig. "She always does, come fire or plague, though this devastation cannot be so easily swept into the Muzad... It'll be generations this time."

Her blue eyes refocused on the half elf before her and she smiled and tipped her hat to him.

"But where we began is no longer of consequence to us now is it? The wind sweeps us along down a different road, and I for one and glad of it! To settle is to stagnate.

"As for me, this is the longest I've spent with dirt beneath my feet since I left the desert. There is much freedom to be had riding the waves! The Sea of Fallen stars has been my home of late, but this is my first time this far north and after two years, I wouldn't mind tasting something other than salt on the air for awhile!

"Speaking of tasting..." Saedda shifted her gaze to Rodrick's chin, where his most recent tattoo had been drawn of insects flowing from his mouth. "I very much appreciate your theatricality as well as your art," she winked.

"Which tattoo was your first? You mentioned that it is your blood, not the ink itself that contains the magic, but I must ask... Do you also do the more mundane tattoos, and if so..." The corners of her mouth turned up in a small grin. "How much do you charge?

"Two years living among sailors and I've yet to receive my first tattoo! I'm an embarrasment to the industry!"

"Calimport!? The man who ignored me and kept me hidden most of my life dumped me on the road towards Calimport. The family held property there within the city. Part of the trading buisness. You said the Damage was quite extessive? I had heard that the city was attacked and that my Father, if you can call him that was missing afterwards. I assumed he had gone into hiding but this may mean he's dead. If this is true I wonder if my step brother left before that time? This could change a great many things. Perhaps I should contact my sister when we get closer to the trade routes.

Rodrick then snapped too, almost as if he had forgotten anyone else was there. Changing the subject with his usual grace and flair.

"You asked about the artwork. I was not completly truthful when Isaid they were not magical themselves. Not everyone understands magic and how it works for a socerer so it is the easier explanation but in effect these images are my spellbook. As with your own actual book it is not magical in itself but in a way no magic can be done without it. For me it serves as a control and a guide to the spells I have figured out that I can cast without incident.

"But to answer your question. Yes I can put them on anyone. I do not normally do so for others but there have been exceptions. For you there would be no charge.

Rodrick then gave a wry and very roguish smile to Saedda

"Unless you wanted it someplace intresting then I may have to pay you for such an honor.

"It will take sometime and is painful. This could not be done tonight. Alchol thins the blood and makes the overall image seem faded and poorly done. Did you have something specific in mind or is this just a general inquiry to see if can give Sir Trueblade or one of the dwarfs a tatoo while they slept?"

At this Rodrick let a loud lagh drained his mug and ordered to more. He had not remebered having such a lengthy and intresting conversation since his Mother had passed. He was not even sure how long ago that was?

The Coronet and Cabbage, 3rd of Eleint Empty Saedda

The thought of creeping into Glanen or Sir Tobias' room under the cover of darkness, had the blue-haired genasi boisterously echoing Rodrick's laughter.

"As entertaining as the thought might be," she managed to say between guffaws, "I highly doubt our companions would see the humor in such a prank."

Saedda grinned again at the mental image and drained the last of the ale from her mug just as the wench brought the next round. She happily handed over the empty glass as a fresh one was set before her.

"No, as an admirer of your art, I think I would prefer to be the one so fortuitous as to serve as your canvas. I've had a few ideas of what form such a tattoo might take..." Lifting her hand, she drew her long, pale fingers along the green feather which embellished her hat. "But as to the placement, I've yet to decide. I would so hate to ask you to do something boring," she blinked at him innocently, with heavy blue eyelashes.

Her attempt at the coy expression was completely undermined by a throaty chuckle as she raised the newest glass to her lips and took a sip.

"I'm not at all put off by the thought of pain for a good cause but if I'm required to be cold sober at the time, you're right...this is unfortunately not the evening for such an activity! Soon perhaps, if you are indeed willing." Tipping her hat in thanks, her lips turned up in an uneven smile. "I'll be sure to think more on the matter once this current haze of inebriation has lifted!"

Saedda was pleased to find the easy and playful exchange even more refreshing than the cool ale on her tongue. It had been a long week. A long week of somber discussions and stoic faces. While such things have their place of course, the genasi found it necessary from time to time to simply enjoy herself without any weightier matters pinning her down to the ground. The tingle beginning in her fingers was rather pleasant as well!

Her thoughtful gaze drifted over the tattoos that weren't hidden by the vest Rodrick was so unconscionably forced to wear. She'd wished to get a better look at them, and would have had it not it not been for that thrice-cursed bartender... Next time the rogue decided to add a new tattoo, she'd have to ask to observe the procedures. Creation of the ink and all!

"You say that your artwork serves as a kind of guide to your magic... A focus I presume, as I've seen your spells actually channeled through them. It is very impressive, and unusual I believe even among sorcerers, and I say that fully aware of the fact that we travel with a flying cat who has the ability to channel Burning Hands!" she laughed aloud.

"What then of your hair? A very lovely shade of pink it is this evening I must say!" Grinning, Saedda flipped her own bright, blue hair over one shoulder. "How is it that it changes after you've channeled a spell? Is it a conscious decision as a Cantrip might be? Part of that afore mentioned theatricality that I so enjoy, or is it perhaps an after-effect of the magic itself?"

"It is a effect of the casting itself. I can control it in that it only affects my hair and can even usually predict the color it will turn. It is a it of the magic that pours through my blood acting on its own. It is this blood power that allows my tatoos to act as they do. My inks are tuned to the spell itself and my blood provides the power. This power also allows me to sense magic in an item by mere touch.

Each spell requires special components to create the ink. Much like you research a spell I have to research what my ink needs to be. Usually I use the same component you would use to cast a spell of similar power but I must grind it into powder to become part of the ink.

What of you? How did you learn to use magic? And what of your striking blue hair?

The Coronet and Cabbage, 3rd of Eleint Empty Saedda

The wizard drew in a breath in order to sigh slightly... Sitting back in her chair, she pulled that audatious feathered hat down over one eye once again before peeking up at the half elf.

"The answer to both your questions involves my parents," Saedda began slowly. "My mother was an an accomplished Invoker and it was she that first began teaching me the Art. I've diverged only slightly from her chosen path. Force magic has much in common with Evocation, but I've always found the manipulation of energy fields to be most fascinating."

Reaching toward her half-filled mug, she pushed it a bit with a long finger. Scooting it around the table as she spoke.

"While I was out to sea, my mother fell to the green flame of the monster that destroyed Calimport. I saw what was left of the ward upon my return. I'm quite assured that she felt no pain before her demise."

The wizard sat up in her chair again and studied Rodrick intently before continuing. "The city was so much more that just extensively damaged, my friend... Decimated would be a more apt term I think. If your father was in Calimport at the time of the Destruction, than he is quite likely no longer among the living I'm afraid, but if there is anything I might do to aid you in verifying that, I'd be happy to oblige," she said with a quick tip of her hat.

Taking a long pull on the ale she'd been fiddling with, Saedda attempted to answer his second question.

"My hair is vastly less chaotic than your own, I hate to admit," she laughed, "and the explanation of it is far more dull! My father is genasi. He carries strong blood ties to the djinni that once ruled what is now Calimshan. I've never met him, though that bothers me not a whit...probably because I understand that spirit of wanderlust he has... Had?"

"I've no doubt it will one day kill me," the woman grinned as she raised her mug to Rodrick in a brief toast, "but what's life worth if you spend every moment of it as a sedentary lump of flesh?! No, I'd much rather go out having seen as much of this world as I can!"

Off the topic of Calimport now, the genasi fell once again into a more comfortable state, propping her legs back up on the empty seat beside her and wearing an easy smile.

"Seems we both have a little bit of magic in our blood! Mine can be attributed to air genies likely from millenia ago... Have you learned the source of the magic within your own?"

"I should say that he is not my father. He was the man I lived with because he was my Mother's Husband in Water Deep. If he died in Calimport I would happily salute those that caused his death. At the same time I fear that he is dead for then I will be the last of My house and must take my Fathers name until I can restore my Mothers own line. I do not wish to be a "Noble". It does not suit my style so to speak."

"As to my actual father he is a High ranking elf of the Elven Court. He was sent to treaty with the Masked Lords of Waterdeep. My Mother was one of these Lords and handled the negotiations. She like me was of mixed elven heritage. As a result the negotiations left halls and resumed in the bed chamber. I am the result of that negotiation. Elf males do not accept children of half blood so my Mother was my only true parent."

"You can imagine how her husband would have acceptted the news and my true heritage was kept as a family secret for my entire life. As a permanent stain on his honor I was never treated well. I also have reason to believe he had some responsibility in my mothers death as one of our blood line does not die young of natural causes."

"Seems we both have a little bit of magic in our blood! Mine can be attributed to air genies likely from millenia ago... Have you learned the source of the magic within your own?"

"I have some of of the details but not all. My mother as I said was a half breed like myself and my blood magic come from my Grandfather which is of course her Father. It is his heritage that I do not have all of the details too. The answers I have only lead to new questions. I am as of yet not ready to announce what answers I have as I am not sure how it will be recieved. Some of the answers to the questions I still have myself will be key to that. I will tell you this much however, I am actually 3/4 elven heritage and none of my blood comes from the Heritage of Humans."

"I will also promise you this, when I have more details and can answer the big questions that will follow you shall be the first to know. Unless the Tresym can read minds as well as talk into them. then you may have to be second."

At his last comment Rodrick laughed loudly then stood lifting two new mugs of ale and Handing one to Saedda.

" With a full ale salute we honor you, Our Mothers of Beauty, Wisdom and Magic. We Thank you for the blessings of our Heritages of Mixed Blood."

He then touched her mug and they Drained a full ale each within an instant. Internally he breathed a sigh of relief he had never had a confidant or friend he felt he could trust for most of his entire life. He felt now that he had one in Saedda.
