It was late in the afternoon when the ranger wandered over to the Wyvern Watch hoping to talk with a certain priest of Mystra. Her neck was sore from the night before and the sleep she had lost made her head ache slightly. Somehow the stench of sewer still lingered in her nose almost as if to taunt her, planting doubts that her involvement with righting the wrongs behind the fraudulent temple of Mystra was over. Willow gritted her teeth against the dull ache in her temples. She and her companions had done what they could to clean up the mess at the temple and now it was over, for them at least. The situation behind the fraud was no longer her responsibility no matter how concerned she was about what they were shipping in and out of there.

Willow was so deep in thought that she nearly collided with someone in the street. "A thousand pardons," Willow bowed her head to the woman with a full basket on her arm and a child at each side. "I did not see you there."

Willow offered her most apologetic and assuring smile to the lady, then turned her head to find that she had made it to her destination. Willow closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She needed to organize her thoughts before meeting with Shan Thar, the priest of Mystra. Behind her closed eyes she saw Shan Thar as she first met him at the temple. Sandy blonde hair and smiling amber eyes. The pit of her gut began to wrench into knots as the thought of the priest brought back feelings of betrayal, feelings that Willow knew now to be false and needed to be shoved aside. He was the same Shan Thar as the one she met, the same one she had told some of her secrets to, he was not a fraud. Nothing had changed. Willow sighed, stretched her neck and threw her shoulders back. Then with a smile on her face she opened her eyes and walked into the Wyvern Watch Inn.

Willow caught Shan Thar's eye as she walked into the common room. He seemed to be waiting for her. He motioned her to sit in the open seat next to him. Willow crossed the room and sat down with forced ease. She was still a little tense around Shan Thar, even though she knew now that he was who he claimed to be.

"Good day, Shan Thar." Willow greeted him politely. "I thank you for meeting me like this. I hope I have not kept you waiting long." The ranger's face betrayed a twinge of guilt. "I am afraid I have been a little slow today..."

Willow paused for a moment as she thought through what to say next. She didn't want to barrage this poor man with her desperate questions right after he lost his place of occupation. And she still did not quite know how to broach the subject of her past with others after keeping it so far locked within herself. Maybe the words would just come, eventually. Shan Thar had put her at ease before, there might be the chance, despite all her conflicting emotions, that he would do so again.

"Allow me to express my condolences to you in regards to the former temple of Mystra here in Wheloon. I am sure you must still be in shock over what transpired in the last day. I hope you may find a true temple to you goddess soon where you may serve her with all your heart." Willow smiled reassuringly at the priest. "I do hate to see you have to leave for so far away, though. I had hoped," Willow shifted her eyes to her feet, "I had hoped that you were the answer to my searchings..., the key to finding my past." The ranger let out a laden sigh as she let her pent up emotions roll slowly off of her back, her eyes welling up with tears.

The middle-aged priest possessed a comforting smile, and he displayed it now to help put the young woman’s concerns at ease. “A temple it may have been, my dear, but never one dedicated to Our Lady. In its destruction, I harbor no sadness at all, except, perhaps, in that Mystra’s name has been disgraced by a ruthless enemy. Yet, still I smile, content in the knowledge there are those brave enough to face such deception and overcome it. Rest assured, the shock departed me quickly. My faith prepares me for the discovery of great mysteries, after all!”

His smile widened, as she professed her hope, and Shan Thar reached a soft, white-gloved hand across the table in a consoling gesture. “Come now, young lady, do not find despair so easily! I was never the answer . . . had I been, never would you have escaped the courtyard without knowing your past entirely, I promise you that!” The priest’s eyes twinkled with warmth and wisdom. “No, no, not I. The answers you seek reside with Our Lady. She holds mysteries close to her heart, and reveals them in her own time. Sometimes, she provides her faithful with the gift of visions, but these are few and far between, I fear. Understand, my dear, that the destination only requires strength to get to; you will learn more about who you are in the journey than ever you will once you attain its end. Our Lady knows this, and she knows when it is best to gift you with the final discovery. Faith, ever and always, remains the key to that door.

“But, never let it be said that Shan Thar offered no help when one so deserving of it sat at table with him! As it so happens, those most capable of solving your mystery are very close, indeed! Closer, even, then my destination of Sembia!”

The words had certainly come to her.

Like an invisible bystander, she watched as the words tumbled out of her mouth, ignorant of all grace and tact. "I had hoped that you were the answer to my searchings..., the key to finding my past."

Well, that could have gone better, Willow berated herself internally. Did you have to go and place the expectation of the fulfillment of a life’s goal on this poor man’s head?

But then, on second thought, it could have gone worse.

Willow silenced her thoughts as Shan Thar began to speak. His words did indeed put her at ease, as she had anticipated. Despite her eyes being full of tears she no longer felt the need to cry. All her worries now seemed small and unimportant. Willow smiled back at the congenial priest. Two large tears traced their way down her cheeks, the last remnants of the wave of emotions that was now ebbing away. The ranger brushed her tears away before speaking.

“Forgive me, I was hasty in my speech. I do not wish to put such a high expectation on you. I have gotten a taste, a glimpse at my past and it appears I have gotten a bit desperate for more.” Willow bit her lower lip in a sheepish grin.

“You say that I will learn more about who I am in the journey to attaining the knowledge I seek…” the ranger looked at Shan Thar in earnest. “I do not understand these words, but they seem wise, and so I wish to find out what they mean.”

Willow stared over the priest’s shoulder as she thought on these words. Jerking herself out of her reverie Willow murmured, “Yes, I will have to think more on your words.”

Dropping her gaze down to stare at her hands as they began to fidget on the table, she spoke carefully, not wanting to get her hopes to high. “Who are these that you know may help me in my quest?”

Shan Thar smiled peacefully, confident this young woman would be overjoyed at the recommendation he was about to make. "In all the Realms, none have so many followers of power and wisdom as the Lady of Mysteries. Her magic rules all things great and small; thus, those who command such an immensely important Art so dominantly must also be masters of its theory. Amongst the greatest of those masters resides almost due north of where we now sit, in the cozy little village of Shadowdale. The Great Sage, they call him; a Chosen of our faith. He has the power, the knowledge, to uncover the mystery that has shrouded your mind.

"To reach him, all you need do is travel the Blister Trail along the southern edge of the Wyvernwater to Immersea, then travel north along Calantar's Way, which becomes the Moonsea Ride after Arabel. At the ruin of Tilverton, where the Ride turns east, continue north through the Shadow Gap on the Northride. When you emerge from the Gap it will be in the westernmost reaches of the Dalelands, but the Northride will take you true all the way to Shadowdale, where the Great Sage resides within his tower."

"To Immersea, then north, through Arabel and Tilverton..." Willow repeated the directions Shan Thar gave her under her breath in order to commit them to memory. How she wished that she had a map of Cormyr that she might have some point of reference.

"The Great Sage lives in Shadowdale, eh?" Willow shook her head in incredulous amusement. "That's funny. I left the Dalelands three years ago in search of answers about my past. Now, by the humorous hand of fate, my path leads me back to the Dalelands." The ranger laughed, though a sadness hid behind her eyes.

"The Great Sage..." Willow let her mind wander at the thought of someone who could tell her what her heart wanted to know. She imagined him with Shan Thar's kindness (though much older!) and with a wealth of wisdom akin to Sir Rainsworth's, only much more vast. And powerful, yes, Shan Thar has mentioned great power... But... Oh surely the preist could not mean...

"Shan Thar, surely you are not referring to THE Great Sage...?" Willow exclaimed hardly above a whisper.

"None other, my dear," the priest confirmed with a grin. "Our Lady blesses that old sage abundantly; some say like none other in the Realms," he winked. "If any could break down the wall that your memory has built around the past, he would be the one. Many great and powerful folk take residence in Shadowdale, or visit the town from far and wide. Even should the Great Sage be away, it is possible you may find another there to help you some until he should return.

"I earnestly believe this to be your best course."

Willow stared at the table for a moment with eyes wide in shock. She swallowed hard and blinked a few times before turning her eyes back to the priest.

"I have no doubt that the course you suggest would bring the best and the fastest results, but..." Willow looked down at the table once again. "...why should I trouble the Sage of Shadowdale with such a trifling matter?

"He has the power to settle the matters of princes and solve the problems of kings. Even a great knight may request his assistance if the need be true. I am just a simple wanderer with of no name. My forgotten past is nothing of consequence when it comes to the future of the Realms.

"Thank you for your kind advice, Shan Thar, but I do not believe I am worthy of an audience with The Great Sage."

"Mayhaps what you say is true," the priest stated with a slight dip of the head and quirk of an eyebrow. "I wonder how many of us know when we're destined to be of consequence to the Realms, however? Princes are born with the knowledge that one day they'll be kings, certainly . . . Did Khelben Arunson know in his earliest days that he was destined to become the Blackstaff? For that matter, did they Old Sage himself realize his destined position amongst the Lady of Mysteries' most favored when his life was still young? I cannot say that they did or didn't, of course, but somehow I would think it unlikely. You see, my dear, the gods determine who will be great and when; these are things we do not dictate for ourselves."

Shan Thar leaned in a bit, almost conspiratorially. "You may not be worthy of the Sage of Shadowdale's time," he hesitated, letting that hang for a moment before finishing, "Or there may never have been one more worthy.

"Naturally, the choice is yours one way or the other as to whether you go," the priest pressed into the back of his chair again. "But, if our Lady has opened this opportunity for you to discover that which you lost, I wonder if you should mock her by choosing not to take advantage of it? You may never get such a chance again."
