Sleepless in Akiros Empty Sleepless in Akiros

Post  Wynnsaren Mon Jun 17, 2013 10:04 pm

30th of Gozran, 4711

It was a lovely spring night in Akiros.  The Tapestry was velvety black and unobstructed by clouded skies, which allowed the sharp chill of the early season to penetrate the lands below the stars.

Wynnsaren took full advantage.  She'd had her couch moved to the roof of the little mapmaking shop so she could sleep in full view of the canopy above.

While she'd been granted a room within the castle, one that was currently being constructed with her in mind by her generous friends, she'd yet to move in.  Oh there were a few furnishings that she'd had sent over.  It would have been impolite to refuse such a kindness, but when Wynn was in town, she still stayed in the upper room of the shop.

Not that her quarters weren't beautiful or that she didn't wish to be nearer to Matsuro Shi should they need her, but she'd lived in a palace once before in her youngest life and still bore unpleasant memories of being confined there.

Maybe this summer, she reasoned.  Adelise would be ready to take over the shop fully and Wynn could take her place in the castle.

Glas was there at her side, enjoying having his tentacles stroked after their long evening run.  It was very late. . . past midnight if she'd cared to guess, and her eyes had just started to drift closed when she felt a knowing come upon her.

The oracle sat bolt upright and smiled wide.

"Come Glas," she flashed in sign to the startled akata, who rose upon his haunches.  "More to do before we rest."

The thin, white shift drifted over the curves of her body like a gossamer mist as she padded down the streets of Akiros toward the castle with Glas beside her.  Before arriving at the gate, she pulled her cloak over her shoulders and fastened it out of modesty if not against the chill of the evening.

"Good evening, Ambassador," called the young watchman as she approached.  He was a strapping, flaxen haired fellow, slightly older than Zaistrun by her guess and threatening to surpass the king in height.  There was Ulfen blood in him by anyone's reckoning.

"It is that, Kennrick, and most fair," she nodded.  "A quiet one as well I hope?"

"So far, so good," the man smiled beneath his half helm.  "Is it the Gardens for you and Glas again tonight?"

Wynn smirked at that.  "No, not tonight, sir."  Ulfen in appearance, she thought, but a bit more nosey than the northmen she'd encountered. . .

After taking her leave of the night watchman, the oracle headed toward the easternmost tower, where Zaistrun had taken up residence, and climbed the four flights of stairs to the summit.

A few brief moments after knocking, the door opened and Wynn pulled back the hood of her cloak and smiled softly.

"You wanted to see me, Lord Zaistrun?"

Sleepless in Akiros Empty Re: Sleepless in Akiros

The sorcerer sat back on his divan with a strained expression on his face.  Alone in his tower, he listened to the distant sounds of the city at night, but he did not sleep.  Zaistrun had been tutoring children for fifteen hours today.  Even with Piotr's help in continuing lessons in his absence, it seemed more and more students would pack around him for his presentations.  His unique teaching style, which he had not seen elsewhere used his illusionary ability to produce images out of thin air, and as long as he was concentrating on them, he could produce letters and numbers and words for all to see in the area.

As it was, his classes in the early morning and late evening were very well populated at well over a hundred people each, and he spent time in the middle of the day for promising students who needed extra time to pursue more advanced studies.  Of all of his students, Piotr was really his most advanced, and although he had magic similar to Zaistrun in that it was innate to him and not necessarily learned, his aptitude for language and writing was greater than any other he had seen.  Not only that, his own style was less harsh than his master's, and some students had specifically flourished under his tutelage, especially since he didn't have the habits of leaving town for half the month on errands with the king.

Immersing himself in work was always satisfying to the young noble.  Although he had no specific title in the new fledgling kingdom besides Magister, he had been in charge of many people for years.  Dealing with children was a bit different than dealing with miners.  One notable difference is that miners did not tend to cry when pushed to their limits, that took some getting used to.  But regardless, there were many similarities as well.  And the more time he spent dealing with them, the less he would be sitting here thinking about what he had done to make Sarala so mad.

Despite his exhaustion and that he would be awake in just a few hours, he listened to the quietness of a burgeoning city sleep.  The mill wheels powering the saws, which had long since gone to supporting a night shift as well, the dogs fighting over scraps in the town dump.  All of it building the strength of a new power in the area, power for civilization and progress.  It did bring a happiness to him, but also a weight.  A weight greater than any he had ever borne.  He hadn't felt this stretched thin since he had done everything he could do to please his mother in her tutelage.  But that wasn't something he really wanted to dwell on.

There were other things that he didn't want to dwell on either, and sometimes it was really a struggle.  He hoped that he wouldn't lose another night of sleep, but it seemed like it would happen.  And then there was a knock at the door.  At first his heart leaped in his chest, as there was one particular night owl he would have loved knock on his door, but that was not likely at all.  Of course anyone knocking on his door at night was unusual.  As he got up and moved toward the door, he wondered if it were some sort of fate that someone would come at this time.  As he was so burdened, whether or not he broke or was fixed would be preferable to his present state.

And Wynn was at the door.  "Oh, good evening Madame.  Please come in.  You have arrived on time."

"Ahh I was expected then," she chuckled, as she was ushered into the magister's lavish apartments. "You must have known before I did myself, which actually . . . I find rather refreshing. Too often people don't appreciate my dropping by without appointment."

Wynnsaren had seen his tower once before but he'd redecorated since then, and how so! Rich fabrics, beautiful tapestries bearing the Garess crest, and shelves of books lined the walls with stained glass windows opening out to a grand view of the city. Velvet upholstered furniture stood on legs of dark, cherry wood carved into ornate representations of magical beasts, and throw pillows! Yep, this man was a nobleman to the bone. For a moment, she wondered if he'd had someone come in and do the decorating for him, but no... Zaistrun was a man who knew what he wanted and he had excellent taste, which brought her thoughts squarely to the purpose for which she had come.

"Zaistrun, you are troubled. . . " The aasimar turned toward the mentally and emotionally worn sorcerer and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "I hardly need divine insight to see that," she smiled. "I think that perhaps you could use a friend to speak with and ease your mind, either for advice or simply an attentive ear. I am here for you if you wish to employ me in this capacity."

"I appreciate your candor in your intent, but I must say that I did not expect you, but it doesn't mean that you are not welcome.  Come in, but leave the door open if you would.  A late night rendezvous can be scandalous especially when one is dressed in a thin white shift."  His words betrayed no hint of emotion in them, but rather the statement of plain fact.  He turned and walked to the center of the bedchamber and sat down upon an overstuffed chair next to a second identical one with a table in between.  On the table was a silver pitcher along with some drinking goblets.  With a wave of his hand, he set about to pouring the liquid into both goblets to the brim.

"It's water," he began, "but it is lightly sweetened and warmed, according to a reminiscent of warm apple cider with cinnamon.  If you would prefer another flavor, I change it to any sort of tea, but I haven't yet mastered cream, milk or alcohol flavors.  They are beyond the scope of the spell, I'm afraid.  The flavor will last for about an hour, so feel free to sip.  I normally reserve my magically enhanced flavors for myself but since you call yourself my friend, I am willing to go the extra mile.  Not many are willing to go so far for me, especially at inconvenient times."  He took a mouthful of the illusory cider and relished the memory.

After she was seated, he started speaking of matters of consequence.  "I am troubled, and slightly confused.  I know better than to ask you where you have gotten your information, but I would like to ask a question before we get started.  I would like to know what you believe my trouble is, and then I'll explain from there to save time." There is much to do in the morning after all, he thought to himself.

Wynnsaren gazed at the Magister for a long moment, her lips turned up in a gentle smile, while the akata stalked about the room a few times before finally settling down right beside the open door for a snooze.

"There are precious few things that will keep a man wakeful at this hour after a very long and arduous day," she began, as she reached for the goblet. "An aching and frustrated heart is at the top of that list."

After a swirl, she took a sip of the cider flavored water and her eyes widened slightly as the true taste bloomed upon her tongue. It conjured memories long past of her time among the Varisians and the nights spent listening to tales and dancing beneath the stars. Of course . . .the Varisian version of apple cider was a much harder variety.

"Forgive me for the abrupt change of subject, but this is exquisite," she remarked in amazement, raising her goblet to him. "If you hadn't mentioned it, I would've sworn this was the genuine article! Thank you, my friend, you honor me with your generosity.

"But, perhaps I should honor you by getting to the point," she admitted with a wink, and her shining eyes drifted over his shoulder as they lost their focus.

"You are a young and virile man, Zaistrun Garess. Noble . . . handsome . . . and terrible at concealing your feelings for a certain young lady. If I had any inclination that my current attire would distract you whatsoever, I would've come to your door in winter furs, but I know your eyes light up only for her. I have seen it. I am not as blind as I may appear.

"Now I know also that you are a man of practicalities. You understand well how lack of sleep can effect the amount and quality of work done during the day, so either for prudence and productivity or for relief and encouragement of an overburdened heart, I believe that it would do you much good to avail yourself of a friend who wants to help . . . a friend who also happens to be of the female persuasion and perhaps knows a thing or two about the female heart."

"My sincerest gratitude for your honors, you are most kind.  Although my eyes might seem to betray me, I believe I would be far more adept at concealing my feelings for Sarala if I wished to do so.  I can cast a mighty illusion if I am so inclined."  He flicked his middle finger against the silver glass he was holding, and allowed it to ring for a moment. "Although I am certain I still would not escape your notice."  He gave her a thin smile, but seemed not to quite know what to do when it seemed as if she didn't react whatsoever.

He cleared his throat.  "That I am at a loss of how to proceed from here, I only just realized myself.  I thought I could be patient, but I feel that even though I am so close to her on many occasions, she simply refuses to see me or the things I do on her behalf.  It seems that not any amount of time could pass and she would simply refuse to even consider me as anything but a tool used to prop her brother's greatness.  Not only that, but she and her brother refuse to give me any thanks for the pains I've taken on their behalf, stepping into harms' way and putting in many long days."  He shook his head in consternation and confusion.

"I've always been treated with contempt by my family, and have come to expect such treatment from them.  I've always been treated with worth from many others as they treat me according to my station.  But the Medvyeds treat me with contempt, but only me and their enemies.  I feel as if I am not welcome here.  And even as I am a man of my word, I shall continue to work as I have agreed until such a man might come who would be able to fill my place, of which there are very few."

"I also feel it would be a disservice to Sarala in particular if I accepted her disapproval of me in her ignorance of who I am.  She recoils if I attempt to bring any subject up concerning myself and her brother seems to have a similarly poor view of me, and I don't understand why they would think as such.  Are you aware of her dissatisfaction toward me and the reasons why?  I would be much obliged for the insight you might provide in this endeavor."

After hearing him out, Wynnsaren said a silent prayer of thanks to the powers who provided her with the nudge to come to him tonight. Misunderstandings were a malignancy, that could be so easily nipped in the bud, but left alone would wither the whole plant.

"You said it yourself, my dear Magister. . . Sarala doesn't know who you really are." The oracle took a swallow of her cider water, her silver orbs remaining trained upon him. "Nor do you make it easy for others to get to know you. It is not a conscious effort I don't believe, but you surround yourself in a mithril shell. Strong as the Mountains . . . proud, immovable and impenetrable. You've had to be that though, haven't you . . . As a buffer against the contempt of your family you've sealed yourself up as a strong bulwark against the storm.

"If you want the Lady to get to know the real you, then you have to know you, Zaistrun. So tell me. Who are you? You are not defined by what your mother thinks of you. . . You are more than just a title or an honorific . . . So who do you say you are?"

Zaistrun countered with a stern gaze before his forehead turned to more of a thoughtful posture.  "Forgive me, but often I have heard those words as a trap, but I don't believe you meant it as one.  There are all sorts of philosophical platitudes that come after that question meant to confuse or annoy.  This trick was done so often to me as a child by my older brothers that I never actually considered the question to have merit before.  Allow me to contemplate some on this."

He took a sip of his cider water as well, his forehead furrowed in thought.  After about a minute, it relaxed itself and he seemed to have found an answer.  He took a more relaxed position and crossed his feet.  "A powerful wizard once told me that you can learn everything you need to know of another wizard by the spells they choose.  As a Sorcerer, I imagine that since my spells are few, they might speak even more highly of my inner self.  Since I have Thassalonian blood, my spells are even more indicative of who I am, as the schools of magic are all associated with sins and virtues."

The young sorcerer sat forward in his chair.  "Are you aware of the Virtues of Rule?  Forgive me if you do, speaking through it might give me more clarity of thought.  Many overlook such things because the Sin Magic of the Runelords was much more prominent. But the empire of Thassalon was built on the Virtues.  That alone is the reason why I do my best to remain benevolent as one of the greatest empires in all the world was built on righteousness.

"My first mastered spell was Silent Image, an illusion.  The Virtue associated with it is Honest Pride, or what I believe it should be translated as is Dignity.  In my youthful vigor, I used the spell to emulate other spells I was supposed to learn without my knowledge.  I was simply trying to be dutiful and live up to the expectations upon me.  In all ways I have done this, whether or not I considered myself to be capable originally of doing so.  In such a way I have learned a confidence that has not often betrayed me."

"As I worked in the mines, I came about the ability for my fireworks.  Even though it has the appearance of an illusion, it is in actuality quite different.  Sir Paido is able to emulate the fireworks I make with alchemy, but alchemy is but a subset of the transmutation school.  Transmutation is associated with Generosity or sometimes Prosperity.  As I began to develop this, I became excellent at making things grow and develop into their greatest potential, and it has been one of my greatest accomplishments to turn two mines who were about to be closed into the most profitable in Brevoy."

"The connection of these two schools is rare, because quite often they are opposed to each other.  In Sin Magic, the schools are opposed and cannot be learned by proponents of their opposite.  In such a way, it is quite possible that the difference between appearance and reality is blurred in me.  My magic tutors were all quite displeased because they could not believe in such a contradiction, but both of these are in me in equal measure and manifest themselves through my gifts."

His throat had become dry with all his speaking.  He took a long draught of his beverage and refilled it, offering Wynn a refill as well.  "My other friend Astarton had a good laugh when he figured out all of this.  He often said my magic suited me quite well.  I suppose that's then who I am.  Have you anything to add that I might have missed?"

The oracle held out her goblet for him to top off, and thanked him before taking a sip.

"I would like to meet this Astarton someday," she smiled. "Perhaps if he comes to visit, you could introduce me. I promise I'd wear more than my night clothes to the meeting."

Wynn drowned her chuckle in another swallow of water before continuing with the matter at hand.

"Now, I am not in the habit of telling people who they are, my friend, but merely drawing attention to a few things from time to time. You've told me about your virtues, though there are others that I would have added to the list," the aasimar grinned and raised her glass to the Magister, "and I know well that those characteristics you wear as a badge far outweigh any weaknesses you may have.

"That said . . ." She continued after a brief pause, "you have painted the canvas with only the brightest and boldest colors, but it's the darker more muted hues that give a painting depth and character. It is the painting that comprises both aspects that make a work so intriguing to gaze upon. You have both aspects, Zaistrun. We all do, and I'm not asking that you reveal those weaknesses to me unless you so choose, but what I am suggesting you do, is that you show Sarala the entire panting that is Zaistrun Garess.

"Open up to her.   Allow yourself to be vulnerable and yes, even exposed to possible rejection.   She is far too clever a girl not to see the barrier you've erected, so let her in. Let her see you as I see you," she lifted her chin to face the man fully, her eyes glowing a bright indigo. "Tell her everything you feel for her and what she is to you, not simply what you should be to her.

"I cannot promise that she will return your affections, Zaistrun, but if you can be open and honest with her, and you well know that she can tell the difference, then she will respect you for that risk you are taking for her."

Zaistrun blinked at her a moment.  "I believe we have some miscommunication, or I am not understanding what you are telling me.  A portrait of a tree's broadest strokes and boldest colors are saved for the tree itself, a bejeweled ring only exists to display the jewel."  He paused and took a sip of his beverage.  "But every authentic jewel has a flaw on the inside.  It is what gives the jewel it's own unique quality possessed by no other stone.  Is that what you mean?  But my flaws are quite ordinary.  I'm not sure if this applies."  He looked somewhat confused by the whole metaphor.

Now it was Wynnsaren's turn to blink in confusion.

Tree?  Jewel?  Had she slipped into another language in the midst of their conversation?

The aasimar looked down into her goblet at the magically flavored water.  It didn't taste alcoholic and he'd claimed that it was not, but . . .  She took a sip and rolled the liquid over her tongue just to be sure.

"Okay."  She began tentatively.  "Maybe I could . . .

"Hmmm. . .one second."

Wynnsaren lifted the goblet to her lips once more and drained the entirety of the contents before setting it down on the table.  She realized then that she might have to find something a bit stronger once this discussion had reached it's conclusion.   Maybe metaphors just weren't his thing.

So Wynn began again.  "Let me try to clarify, Zaistrun. . .  You should tell Sarala how you feel about her.  Take the risk.  She's more than worth it.

"Let her see the vulnerable side of you, not just the powerful, sorcerer of a great and noble house who is brave and dignified and generous, but also the man who longs to be loved and truly understood by those he cares for, but most especially by the woman for whom his heart yearns."

A warm, wistful smile spread across her face as she sunk more deeply into the soft chair.  Sarala was fortunate to have someone who loved her like this man did and she hoped that one day his affections would be returned in kind, once these communication hurdles could be overcome of course.  Now that aasimar didn't have to try to hide who she really was, maybe one day she too would know that kind of affection after a lifetime of self-imposed solitude.  Someday there may be time for all that.

Zaistrun rubbed his chin.  "That makes sense.  I've asked her to dance, but I have never told her exactly how I feel toward her.  It's a fine plan.  I believe I will do so when I have opportunity."  The sorcerer let out a sigh of relief.  It seemed rather simple after all.  It was simply just something he needed to address.  He had two friends, and they had to come to him for friendship.  One person had to initiate.  He had seen it done twice, all he had to do was give it a try.  After all, many things were possible as long as you put forth the positive effort.  How to exactly approach her might take some work, but he at least knew what he could say.  "Thank you for speaking with me on this matter."

He uncrossed his legs and put the other foot on top.  "This whole conversation reminds me of a different problem."  He paused and set down his beverage.  Leaning forward in his chair toward Wynn he suddenly got a very serious look upon his face.  "We are going to have to find a way for our king to produce an heir."

Wynn's mouth dropped open at this most. . . unexpected change of subject.  Then something lodged firmly in her throat, forcing her into a coughing fit until the Magister refilled her goblet and she drained it dry.

She was definitely going to have to break open a bottle of wine when she got home.

"Um. . . Zaistrun," the aasimar began gently, after she'd had a moment to recover.  "Though I can't be one-hundred percent sure, I have every confidence that King Thaddeus can figure out the. . .um. . .process on his own.  I'm not sure that we really need to assist him that, do we?"

Running outside in her nightclothes probably brought on this coughing fit.  It was nearly a mile between her shop and the castle, and even though summer was coming, it was still quite chilly.  He waited for her to recover before he continued stating his case.

"Where there are many things our King does not assistance with, there are still quite a few things in which he does require aid.  Arranged marriages can be quite a convenience for busy monarchs. Matrimony is something that is hardly handled by kings anymore, but I'm also sure he could figure things out from there."  He gave her a polite nod.  "If he had his heart set on marriage and had picked someone already, that would be another matter.  But as it is, he pursues no one, and that does speak for a difficult time should his noble passions lead him to an early grave and leave us without a leader."

"Since you are so versed and adept in the matters of courtship and have an excellent vision of a person's character and are travelling abroad and meeting many new people, I only ask that you keep an eye out for prospective queens.  It isn't as if attractive, wise virgins fall from the sky on a regular occurrence, although if that happens, do make note.  She would need to be of high birth, with a sensible head on her shoulders.  If she were of even temperament, it would be good for the children.  Of course she would have to be of excellent moral character or Thad won't have her.  Age isn't a terrible concern as long as she can bear several children, and if marriage would cement a good alliance we can consider that a bonus."

The oracle had an interesting expression on her face about this time, although Zaistrun couldn't quite place it.  Obviously she must be impressed with the enormity of the situation.  "It would be best if we found more than one candidate, so he would have a choice.  I'm all for personal freedom when it comes to love whenever it's practical."

Flushed, Wynn watched the man for a long moment wondering if he was playing some kind of game with her, but he seemed completely sincere in his desire.  He wanted the best for Novastasia, that much was apparent.  While his heart was certainly in the right place, the aasimar wasn't sure at all about how Thaddeus would feel about such arrangements.  He was a Medvyed though.  Arranged marriages were just the way things were done amongst the nobles.

"I. . .   I suppose I could keep an eye out, Magister.  High born you say?  Of course. . .   Royals or nobles.

"Certainly there will be women that meet those requirements you've given and I'm sure they'd be interested in meeting with our king, but are you sure he's ready for that, Zaistrun?   I mean. . . he's been so incredibly busy. . .  If it could even be done, it would take a remarkable woman in order to catch his eye when he's so focused on his duties as king."

"Well, I say high born because that is most of the people you will be dealing with.  To be honest, anyone who can capture the hearts of the people and remain dignified while doing so would work.  Some kings have beauty contests and marry the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, I personally have rarely heard of that working out well.  The most tried and true method is to marry someone fit for the role from birth.  It's much less of a hassle that way."  His eyes took on a faraway look as he continued.  "My mother lived as a commoner all her life before she married my father.  They did find out that she was descendant from three different Runelords, so she did have noble blood in her.  But she was constantly making life difficult for father to smooth things over.  She never did seem to grasp that not all problems can be solved by turning someone's favorite horse into stone."

After a slight pause he jumped right back into the conversation as if he suddenly remembered they were having one.  "And I agree with you that it would take a remarkable woman to catch his eye while he is this busy.  That is precisely the point!  We would like for a remarkable woman to be queen since it will be necessary in the long run to have someone worthy."

"Of course, I only meant. . .oh never mind it's unimportant."  The oracle shook her head wondering when she completely lost the reins on this conversation.

It was interesting hearing the snippets of stories from Zaistrun's past.  While she'd known some of it, the detail of his mother being born a commoner was a surprise to her.  That and her subsequent treatment of his father might explain many of his views toward nobility but Wynn was a little startled that he wouldn't feel strongly about a potential queen being of noble birth.  Perhaps the king would feel differently.  He had an entire nation to think about now, and not just the responsibilities of a third son of a noble house.

"I'll look into it Zaistrun," she acceded, with a nod and a polite smile.  "I do appreciate you entrusting me with the task, and forgive me for my discomfort with the topic, but it's one thing to try and help a friend know how best to approach a girl he likes and quite another to try to find a queen suitable for our king.  Quite another thing indeed. . . "

This was not the reason the oracle had been sent to the Magister's door.  She was fairly sure of that.  Considering the hour, she attempted to gather up those wayward reins again and steer this conversation back on course.

"Was there any other way I might help you regarding Sarala?  Or perhaps there is something else. . . related to you," Wynn quickly amended, "that you wish to speak about?"

The young sorcerer cracked a minor, yet awkward smile.  "I appreciate all you have done for me so far.  When I was young, I pursued Abadar instead of Shelyn, and as such the aspects of courtship are beyond my expertise.  I will defer to you in any actions or advice I might need as I would not even know where to begin.  If you think there is any way I might incur her favor without speaking to her, which she seems to despise, do let me know.

"Moreover," Zaistrun said as he straightened his legs.  "Please do me the honor of allowing me to repay your consideration in kind.  If there is anything you might need from me that I can provide, I will do so immediately without hesitation.  It is my desire to not be a person who is friend in name only, who simply takes and is never able to give.  I do not have many friends as you already understand.  I should endeavor to be the paragon of excellence concerning friendship as my attentions are not terribly divided in that area."  He drained his cup as an exclamation point to his little speech, although his voice never raised in tone or volume.  He set the goblet down on the table but did not bother to refill it. Suddenly, he was tired, and the feeling brought a smile to his face.

"Your kindness and hospitality are more than enough for this night, my friend."  Wynnsaren reached across the table and squeezed his hand.  "I will leave you to your rest.  If you ever have the need or simply the desire to speak with me again, feel free to send a messenger.  I'm still in the process of moving my things into the tower but in a couple of months I shouldn't be so far away."

With a warm smile, the ambassador stood and signed to Glas that it was time to go and the blue, leonine beast rose and shivered his tentacles at her in response.

"As to Sarala. . ."  she added finally, as their conversation drew to a close.  "If you find that your own words don't serve the purpose you desire, perhaps you can begin with words penned by another.  We have many books of poetry in the library.  You might think about finding a poem that illustrates your feelings for her and have it delivered.  It may warm the lady to later hearing your own words to her.

"Good night, Lord Zaistrun," Wynn bowed, "and thank you for seeing me this evening in spite of the. . .peculiar circumstances."

At that, the ambassador and her alien escort swept out of the room, closing the door gently behind them.
