27th Sarenith 4712(approximately)

The small campfire was hazarded due to the cover from the trees.  Tomorrow would be the decisive day against the Queen, and the stone-faced sorcerer felt reservations.  It would have to be addressed, and it would be best if it was done now.  He stood from his regular place beside the fire and walked over to the king, who busied himself with his holy book.  Zaistrun glanced over at Sarala, who busied herself with eyeing the recent recruit.  Not that it bothered him that she was distrustful of this particular gnome.

He cleared his throat as he approached the studious king.  He knew that Thad didn't really like being approached by him because usually it was due to some criticism that he did so.  Not that the king needed as much of that anymore, he was forming himself into a perfectly serviceable king.  At least as best as one who only paid lip service to Abadar could.

"Sire?"  He began after clearing his throat a second time.  "Might I have a moment of your time?"

An Admission of Weakness Empty Thaddeus Medvyed

Post  Colin Marcus Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:06 am

Thaddeus looked up from his worn copy of 'The Birth of Truth and Light'. Setting it back amongst the scant few things they had brought with them on this journey he turned to his Magistar.

"Of course, Zaistrun. What's on your mind?"

An Admission of Weakness Empty Zaistrun Garess

A slight pause was all that hinted to the trepidation that had built up within the sorcerer. "I have a concern that I need to divulge to you that may be an issue. Are you familiar with Thassalonian magic?"

After being met with a blank look that seemed to indicate that he had gone beyond the King's experience, he continued more slowly than he originally intended. "I am descended on my mother's side from a long line of specialist in Thassalonian magic. The seven great schools of magic are..." He saw the king's eyes begin to glaze over. "... not terribly important to this except for one small detail. I have affinity for two of them. Illusion, or making things seem like they are not, and Transmutation, which is the actual transformation of something into what it wasn't before. The collision of change and the perception of change is something of an unusual thing in magic, and it is signified by one thing: Shadow."

"Shadow magic is the unreal approaching real. While your shadow in actuality has no substance, shadow magic imitates the real and eventually approaches the real. Since we are going to be fighting shadows, I understand them well due to my affinity. I know this might be a bit much, so let me give you the sum of my explanation. Through my heritage, I have a close association to shadow magic, and when I told you as we were headed in here that I have been working on such, it is quite true. It is my nature. It is in my blood. The problem is that I might be susceptible to the allure of darkness."

The sorcerer looked about him as he said that last sentence, not terribly sure he wasn't overheard. Not all of his attention was on their travelling partners. "This place is far too comfortable for me. I don't dare trust it."

An Admission of Weakness Empty Thaddeus Medvyed

Post  Colin Marcus Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:14 am

Thad stared at him a moment as his strange words rattled about in his mind. Then he stared at him more intently. A look with an intensity that could see a man's soul, because that's exactly what it did. One of the rarer abilities that Saranrae had granted her paladins, and Thad seldom used more then his own judgement. However if it bought his friend peace of mind, it was easily worth it. He saw exactly what he expected to.

"I sense no stain on your soul, Zaistrun. Everyone is susceptible to darkness in their own way. Some don't have the strenght of will to fight as well as others...

"Will has never been something I thought you were in short supply of," he said with a grin.

An Admission of Weakness Empty Zaistrun Garess

Post  Eddick the Steady (XIV) Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:15 am

Zaistrun almost smiled back at Thad. His lips did not move, but his eyes brightened. "You may not be aware, but my considerable will is otherwise occupied in casting of magic, and is not always available for defense. My mother is a villain, my father is weak. I am sure that both are here." He pointed to his heart. "I work very hard to avoid both tendencies, but I might be put into a situation where I might falter."

He pointed around them. "This is such an occasion. From the roots of my mother's bloodline this place calls to me. I wouldn't be surprised if I was able to cast the shadow magic that has before since eluded me by the time we left this place. The shadows itself are not evil though, but many are those who hide there. Perhaps what has held me back is the understanding of the corruption of power, or perhaps it was plain cowardice, but fate seems to disregard my feelings on the matter and push me toward a grand destiny."

"I want you to be aware, sire. And should I begin down the wrong path, I want you to stop me, by whatever means necessary."

An Admission of Weakness Empty Thaddeus Medvyed

Post  Colin Marcus Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:17 am

Thaddeus leaned back as he listened to the unusual request. That... was not what he expected when the sorcerer made his way to him, Not something he expected to hear from Zaistrun... ever.

"I thank you for the warning Zaistrun. It means a lot that you recognize the danger and face it with such... precautions."

Zaistrun was a difficult one for the young king to read sometimes/ Most of the time actually. This showed a maturity he'd rarely met in a man and confirmed in his own mind the wisdom of keeping the Magister in the court, despite what personality conflicts had arisen over the years.

"You have my word, should you start to slip.... I'll be here to pull you back."

An Admission of Weakness Empty Zaistrun Garess

Post  Eddick the Steady (XIV) Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:19 am

Zaistrun relaxed, although it was difficult to tell. "If possible, I would prefer that." They both knew what he really asked. It was enough.

It didn't matter whether or not Thad believed him or not that darkness could take him. He was warned. When he considered where he came from, it was hard to overlook it. Perhaps he would explain further someday, if it were asked of him. But some things were to painful to be volunteered for no reason.

"Thank you for your time, Sire. I shall not interrupt your rest any longer." With that he turned back to go to his preferred place, and made ready to rest.

An Admission of Weakness Empty Thaddeus Medvyed

Post  Colin Marcus Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:21 am

"Any time you wish to talk... my door, or fire is always open." Thad said as Zaistrun turned. They both knew Thad would do what he could to save and redeem whomever he could. It was his nature and mission.

But while unspoken it was also understood that Thaddeus didn't shirk away from harder decisions either. Should the worst happen, Zaistrun's darkness wouldn't harm others.

As he lay down to sleep, he fervently prayed to his goddess that such fates could be avoided.
