Aftermath of Skywatch

Post  Wynnsaren on Tue Jan 06, 2015 8:13 pm

Kuthona the 1st, 4713

Rubbing sleepy eyes, Wynnsaren floated down the castle's corridor with the akata by her side.  It was just past dawn when Lord Garess brought her back from Skywatch -- not an hour she would normally see purposefully, but it was necessary to speak with the king on a few consequential matters and it was best to do so when the entire castle wasn't bustling with its usual activity.

Even at this hour it was impossible to avoid them.  The accusatory glances.  The various degrees of pitiable to dirty looks.  The guards were the worst.  She was sure that most of them probably did take the king at his word but at best, because of her perceived weakness, she'd made them look bad in front of the king and all of Akiros once word got around.  It was not something they would soon forget.

It was due to this understandable attitude that the aasimar chose to bypass the underlings with her initial business and go straight to the man in charge.  One she trusted above all the others.

Glas' claws tapped against the stone as they made their way toward their destination and stopped in front of the door to Sir Paido's office.  She was a bit surprised at how nerved up she felt.  It had been a couple of weeks since she'd seen any of the Council and she wasn't entirely sure where she fit into the picture any longer.  Would she find that their attitudes toward her had changed since being home for a time?

Wynn took a moment and smoothed out her red velvet damask gown before knocking gently at the Knight-Commander's door.

Paido was scrutinizing a text he had brought in the day prior by courier from Osirion, though it probably had been produced somewhere else. It reportedly contained, amongst hundreds of pages of astronomical observations, the details of an encounter that occurred centuries ago with a being from beyond the stars. He had yet to find the incident within the pages, as relevant information could be contained anywhere beneath the voluminous work's covers, and the entire work needed careful attention.

His ears perked up as he heard movement outside his door and down the hall. He slowly closed, then opened his eyes. This had the potential to be quite awkward. He left the book in a open site to serve as a icebreaker, should one be needed, then waited for the knock. When it finally arrived, he purposedly affixed a warm smile, and opened the door to greet the Lady Wynnsaren with a half bow.

"Sir Paido. I. . . I am glad to see you." Wynn curtsied politely, using the moment to gather herself more properly. The last thing she had expected to see was a friendly smile pointed in her direction!

"I hope I am not taking your attention from a matter of immediate import but I have something of a favor to ask of you." Pushing back the hood of her gown, she glanced down the hall at the guard who was keeping a wary eye and nonchalantly resting his hand on the hilt of his sheathed blade.

"Might I come in?"

"Of course, Lady Wynnsaren." Paido moved aside and gestured to let her pass for her first visit to his quarters. Lately it had become something of an observatory, with star charts covering walls and dozens of books on astronomy covering the few low tables. "I can think of nothing you might ask of me that I would not give me outmost in trying to achieve."

"This request should be particularly up your alley I believe."

As she drifted inside, her eyes flitted from surface to surface taking in the sheer volume of astrological information on display. Wynn smiled genuinely. The threat from the stars had become a threat to the crown and as such, the First Knight of Novastasia had taken it upon himself to know all that could be known about the subject.

Maybe, just maybe they would be ready. . .

"I have come bearing some information for His Majesty the King. Information that should prove important to you as well, both as his protector and due to your necessary intellectual pursuits," she tapped one of the astronomy books with her finger. "Once I would have gone straight to our liege on the matter but I believe that under the circumstances it would be best if I had an escort. More than that, I covet your opinion on these matters, Sir Paido.

"King Thaddeus should be nearing the end of his prayers at this hour. Do you think I could trouble you so immediately?"

"I do appreciate that you are exercising caution, one can never be too prepared, and it would be...derelict to let our enemies come at us the same way a second time without precautions. I am deeply curious about what information you have, especially if it deals with...this." he said, sweeping his arm about room. "I am ready to depart now."

Wynn nodded amiably. "Let us be off then." Upon receiving some signed instruction, the akata led the way back down the hall toward where the king could be found -- rain, snow or shine, offering his morning prayers before the shrine of Sarenrae.

The castle gardens were blanketed in a thick fall of snow from the previous evening. The path had been cleared by the fastidious groundskeeper, and she imagined he would have cleaned off the statue as well but as they approached the figure in question, there appeared to have been no evidence of such. No clumps of snow on the ground, no footprints but the king's own. It was almost as if such cold could not touch the goddess of the sun!

When she spied the king sitting contemplatively upon his bench, Wynnsaren offered a floor-sweeping curtsy.

"Your Majesty, I hope I am not intruding upon your much needed solitude."

Thaddeus smiled widely at the sound of the familiar voice. It seemed like forever since they had parted company at Skywatch, and much had transpired in her absence. Frustrating rabble-rousers and scandals galore, but this last week had been fairly quiet. He believed this was just one more hurdle that he had cleared.

"Not at all..." he stopped a moment as he saw the company she was keeping. Sir Paido and Wynn, both coming to see him this early? A look of concern crossed his face as weighed the possibilities. Surely there wasn't another quest already...

"Good morning. What find the two of you here so early? Is there something wrong?"

"Nothing of immediate urgency, My King." The oracle offered a reassuring smile and clasped her hands behind her back. "However, I have come upon a few points of information which should be made known.

"The Knight-Commander kindly agreed to accompany me this morning in light of. . .recent events and also, by your leave, to hear what I have to say as it pertains to him as well."

"Ahhhh," the king said with new understanding. He rose and dusted off his pants. It was foolish to think that things could immediately get to back to the way they were so quickly. Wynnsaren was more concerned about appearances then he was, and undoubtedly had the support of Sir Paido and Zaistrun on this matter too. It was probably for the best he had someone watching out for his reputation and safety. Still, hopefully just a temporary arrangement.

"Well, I hope you had better success with your research then I have. Admittedly my research consists of asking one person... but Feluanil has come through for us in the past with ancient lore. However, Luthunar was not a word she was familiar with. For that matter, she has very little insight into Cyclopean culture at all. There just hasn't been any overlap with them and her."

"It is fortunate then that Onora of the Pathfinders was able to locate a bit of information on the subject." Wynnsaren signed toward Glas to go enjoy the garden and the akata barreled off down the path before diving straight into a snowbank.

She smiled softly after the tentacally-blue terror and continued. "It took them a week to discover the significance of the word and the only way they were able to do that was through the study of the Vhordekai tablets you donated. Luthunar is a religious, Cyclopean name for the Moon. It must have held great ritual significance for them as it does for many of our religions today.

"So that information brings us to this. . . The last entry of the journal we found in Skywatch tower says "It has become readily apparent that all signs point to Luthunar. The answers to wake the dreamer must be found there.""

The aasimar pursed her lips into a grin. "We may be in for a bit of a road trip."

Thaddeus felt an electrifying chill run down his spine to the tips of his toes at the idea. His eyes betrayed them as they twitched toward the horizon and the ever fading moon vanishing with the dawn. "Seriously?" Thad couldn't help but return her grin. "I can't even fathom such a thing..."

A look of confusion crossed his brow as he considered the implications. "Do we know anything else about this religion? Desna is said to be tied to the moon much as Saranrae is to the sun... but what of this Luthunar? Is this a good deity or an evil one? I've rarely had any good experiences with Cyclopean culture... but now I'm curious.

"After all... didn't your vision have the tentacles destroying the moon or something?"

"Yes, Your Highness," Wynn nodded. "A dark tendril or tentacle pierced the moon and reached out toward the central stalk growing out of Skywatch. I believe the Observers -- my working name for the former occupants of the tower, had the right of it. The moon may hold the key to waking or stopping this Dreamer in its plans to reach Golarion."

After pausing a moment to let these thoughts sink in, she continued. "As to the religion, there is nothing else yet known, though the Pathfinders continue to study the Vordekai Tablets. There was certainly a presence of an ancient faith there in the city. The squid-looking iconography in mosaic upon the floor in the altar room and again on the chair on the bottom floor of the tower. I have put them up to finding reference to this form but so far the scholars have come up with nothing. It is an Old God -- aeons old by the clues we have previously discovered, and its coming has been foretold for millenia.

"I am hoping that deciphering the strange language written on the walls in Skywatch will prove fruitful, but as it is a complex amalgamation of language and song it is proving to be. . .quite challenging. Though I have made some headway, this will be a time-intensive project."

"Time..." Thaddeus sighed to himself. "It seems everything takes time... yet it rarely seems we have enough to go around.

"This last quest... it felt too close for comfort. The threats are coming from farther and farther away... and our sources of knowledge are drying up..." He shook his head in frustration. "With our new immigrants... I'm not sure how much more privacy you'll have up north before one army or another comes knocking."

"I have considered this as well," she concurred, "which is why I feel it is doubly important for me to return as soon as possible. I intend to speak with Lord Garess about bringing some of his students along for a day or two to help me finish the rubbings. Sir Paido," Wynn smiled and nodded to the Knight Commander, "was very helpful in getting me a head start before he had to be Teleported back, but needless to say there is more work to be done. A few more hands for a few more days and we should be able to at least make a good sized dent in the volume of work, though I will prefer to use the original impressions for as long as I am able of course.

"As to our sources of knowledge drying up. . . I respectfully disagree, Your Majesty." She bowed deferentially. "These writings in Skywatch. The evidence of the old faith. Luthunar. All of these things are mounting up upon us as never before. The time grows near. I assure you I am working diligently -- and I am not alone in doing so, to decipher this intelligence as it becomes available."

The Oracle paused a moment and her clouded eyes drifted to some unseen point in the sky.

"This brings me to other concerns regarding my current duties as Ambassador. On that subject, what do you believe the current climate among the populace to be?"

Thaddeus nodded in silent approval as she detailed her plans for gaining as much as possible from the mysterious astronomers. So much foretold, so much forgotten... It boggled his mind sometimes.

"The climate is a complicate question I'm afraid..." Thad said with a sigh. "As we all suspected, there was a rough patch when we returned and a few fires to put out. I'm afraid both of our reputations may have been tarnished a bit.

"However, since then, I believe we have things back under control. We've traced the dissent and I addressed him personally. I think it went well...

"The details of the situation were never made clear to the public, and the quick pardon seemed... like a double standard between nobles and peasants... but I hope I was able to reveal enough of the situation to dissuade that."

He shook his head in annoyance. He had always been a believer that if you did the right thing, people would remember it. A man's reputation would carry him farther than mere rumors ever would. Becoming the king of a nation and entering the political circles knocked that idea around more then he liked. Now instead of the reputation defending the man, it seemed the man was always defending his reputation. It just seemed backwards to him.

"As of right now, the kingdom has no unrest nor are there any complaints or criticisms. It seems to have quieted down nicely. Therefore, the job is of course still yours if you want it," the king said with a grin.

"You're still the best I can imagine as an ambassador and frankly when dealing with some of the people these last few weeks, I've heard some disturbing things about Pitax that I'd like to know more about. The criticisms of his are pretty biased, but I still think there's more to learn about Irovetti and his kingdom of bards..."

His brow furrowed as he considered everything else going on in the kingdom. It was easy to focus to intently on one crisis or another, but apparently when you become king... you also become a juggler. Somehow he had to give equal attention to every torch he sent into the air...

"The real question I wonder is if I'm spreading you too thin? You're doing important work in Skywatch, to throw Pitax and Mivon and whoever else you're in contact with may become problematic... Have you considered yet finding some subordinates yet? Proxies you could send places in your stead and coordinate the foreign policy from a distance somehow?"

"That would be an excellent solution to the current dilemma," Wynnsaren smiled. "I am glad you understand that I cannot fall short on the true purpose which has brought me to Matsuro Shi but neither do I wish to abandon the post with which you have so honored me. I will start a search for some assistants."

While it pleased her that she may be able to continue as ambassador, she knew the path lay fraught with difficulty after what had transpired during the assassination attempt. The idea of facing down the accusation and mockery of the Mivon High Council made her a little sick to her stomach! Then there was King Irovetti. . . Although she was treated very well during her last visits to Pitax there was something a bit off about the man, and something told her she would be eaten alive when she returned.

There would be time to worry about those details later, for there were bigger fish to fry at the moment. Even more difficult paths to traverse.

The aasimar clasped her hands behind her back, her lips pursing into a frown.

"There is another reason that I needed to speak with you today and with you, Sir Paido," she cast a concerned look toward the halfling. "You see, I have been meditating on the specific details of my previous vision, and I recall very clearly the voice which spoke to me. It was not the voice of the creature we defeated in Skywatch. . . I have concern that I may still prove to be a hazard to you or your kingdom if this power again takes control of me as I dream.

"Now, I am looking into the details of having a Ring of Sustenance created so that I may limit my sleep to a couple of hours a night, but even so. . ." Wynn grimaced and dragged an apologetic gaze up to the king. "I feel it may be unwise for me to retain quarters in the castle."

"Really?" Thaddeus shook his head in confusion. "I'm not sure I agree with that assessment. First of all... limiting your sleep may not be very healthy... especially if that's how your gods contact you. Though, I seem to remember at least one of your visions coming when you were awake." He raised an eyebrow before adding, "Though I have heard of soldiers falling asleep while riding before...

"Secondly... IF, and I am not so certain of that, but IF you are a threat and can be used as a weapon or some such... Wouldn't Matsuro Shi be your target again? Wouldn't it be wiser to stay in the castle where we have a massive amount of guards being wary?

"If something took control again... Keep in mind this enemy seems powerful enough to use any of us and not just you, though I'll concede that your visions may make you more susceptible... I'm not really sure... But with your powers, what would stop you from just flying through a window in the dead of night and attacking? Moving out to some solitary unguarded location doesn't make project safety to me...

"If your concerned about the two hours of sleep you'll be getting, we can arrange a guard or something, but I'd rather keep any dangers close at hand then somewhere... Out there..." He finished with a wave towards the greater part of the city.

"This is about risk management," she explained in an attempt at clarification. "Not risk to your life or Sir Paido's or Lady Sarala or Lord Garess, but risk to my mission here. It may have been your throat which I was led to lunge upon, Your Majesty but you know as well as I that you were not the target of that attack. It was our bond -- that link between Matsuro Shi and myself, which this being and his cronies are attempting to sever. This only further proves how extraordinarily vital we are to one another!

"Now while there may be some grumbling among the populace that I still retain not only my position as Ambassador but my place by your side after such an attack, I believe some of that dissension can be mitigated by arranging a guard as you say. A couple of hours in the cell beside the Lirgeni every evening would not be untenable for a time." Wynnsaren twitched up her lip halfheartedly.

"As to the difference between dreams and visions, I well know how the powers contact me. They do what they will whether I am asleep or not, but as we have learned over and over again, this old god. . .his is the domain of dreams. For now," she ominously interjected. "The Dreamer they called him in Skywatch, the Lirgeni were driven mad through their infected dreams and I. . .well, you are well aware. It therefore behooves me to limit access to my unconscious mind as much as possible until the time has come and these last millenia of planning, preparation and prophecy have come to fruition."

The Oracle sighed and offered the king a warm smile. "Please do not worry for my health due to lack of sleep for I am quite capable of taking care of myself. Besides, I have been sleeping for lifetimes. It is only now that I am finally beginning to wake."

He nodded uncertainly. "I'll not pretend to know all the finer details of this ring... or what hazards it may pose. I imagine the magic of it will be sufficient to protect against the ravages of lost rest... otherwise what good would it be?"

He sighed a little as he considered the rest. "I believe in doing what is right, not necessarily what is popular. I have little doubt that your 'sponsors' will not let you shirk your mission... and you'll be where we need you, when we need you. However, they don't seem overly reliable on your condition when you arrive.

"I still recall the time of Candelmere when they deposited you 'somewhere' in our borders without a horse and you nearly collapsed from exhaustion when you arrived... I believe it is best for the mission to stay relatively near.

"Or, since we don't put our lives on hold just waiting for visions, at least have a better reason then public dissent. It was bad enough listening to the unfounded reasons of why you were allowed to stay at the castle... If you suddenly leave, I feel that will only start more rumors and cement any opinions of 'untrustworthiness.

"You of course are welcome to go or stay wherever you wish, these are just my thoughts on the matter."

"Beg pardon Your Majesty," she began with a sharply arched brow, "but as your appointed ambassador, public opinion of your reign and good name must necessarily be very much relevant to me. Both abroad and at home. I do not believe that taking my own minor precautions in order to ensure the continued satisfaction of your people is somehow the opposite of doing what is right, but instead is a question of prudence and imprudence."

Wynnsaren let her gaze fall the ground, where she shook some of the snow from her toes.

"I only seek to do what is in the best interest of the purpose which has brought me and of Matsuro Shi. Outside of that my concern for public approval is slim to none. Popularity and I have a somewhat complicated past," she snickered softly. "I enjoy it while I have i for as you see, it never lasts for long."

The aasimar floated a over a few feet to the side of the path where a soft blanket of snow had yet to be defiled and promptly flopped down backwards into it with a happy sigh.

"You make a good point about starting more rumors with my leaving," she acknowledged while swiping snow to the side as her arms and legs swished back and forth. "I am still unaware of what was said to smooth everything over as I just arrived last night. So it seems it would be best if I stay put and simply visit the Lirgeni a couple of hours every night until it becomes unnecessary. Once my business at Skywatch is completed of course."

Twisting her head to the side, she found the halfling who had thus far remained silent.

"Sir Paido, as the person in charge of the king's security, do you find this arrangement acceptable?"

"As far as the King's security goes, where you spend your nights makes little difference at this point. I do think it would send a confusing message to the populace though. Thad has already assured the demagogue that you rightly should not be held liable for what transpired. To suddenly place you in confinement could send the message that he was wrong. Or that he caved to pressure. Sigh. Typically I trust that Master Zaistrun will attend to these types of decisions, but having listened to his discourses regarding the aura of infallibility that Kings should exude...I believe you might be causing more harm, politically, with your self-detention."

Paido immediately attempted to make eye contact with Thad to ensure that he had not overstepped his place with such a stinging critique of Lady Wynnsaren's proposed plan.

The aasimar ceased swishing her limbs.

"It is also probable that an ambassadorial sleep-murder spree in the middle of the night could also cause him political harm, could it not?  I had come here considering hanging my cloak in Sarkenhold under guard until the threat had passed -- thereby removing any security issues I may pose altogether, but since there seems to be little concern over the issue, I will remain in the tower here and simply take my own precautions without involving the guards so as to avoid any further political harm to the king's person."

Wynn sat up and floated off her feet before casting a pleased glance down at her little snow angel.

"I thought only to keep you both aware of the situation," she offered with a nod in their directions.

Thaddeus tried and failed to keep an expression suitable for such a serious topic as 'ambassadorial sleep-murders,' however when said ambassador was making snow angels, it was hard to keep the grin subdued.

His eyes danced with a mixture of contained laughter and jealousy. Every time he had ever tried to make one of his own, the act of getting up and walking away destroyed the effect. Which was still better then when he tried to jump away. He was not a strong jumper... many a snow angel was destroyed by him simply falling on it. Floating... floating was better!

"I appreciate the concern my friend," he said with a grin. "I'm sure Sir Paido and Zaistrun would be eager to hear any concerns you have about castle security. Preferably things that don't require either banishment or armed guards every time you want see me. Myself, magical protections and items... are a bit beyond me."

He scowled a little as he thought about preceding weeks. "Do you think it is likely to happen again? Would this dreamer try something again that failed so utterly the first time?

"I mean, I realize we can't plan for every possible contingency, but it seems like he would try to move on to plan C, D? Frankly, I've lost count..."

"I have had no revelations about what the next attack will be or what form it may take. If the Dreamer chooses to infiltrate my dreams again, I have hope that it will have Desna, the true Tender of Dreams to contend with this time, as I have been praying fervently for her protection."

Doubt tinged her thoughts and creased her brow. Normally Wynnsaren would downplay any concerns regarding her mental state but with these two companions she tried to maintain a policy of full disclosure.

"If however that prayer goes unheeded and the Dreamer does manage to take control again, perhaps it will not attempt to attack Matsuro Shi directly. Do you know how easy it would be for me to simply direct the guards or servants or nobles here to climb out of tower windows to their deaths? Or walk into the lake and drown? How many incidents would it take before I become such a stench to the citizens of Akiros that you are forced to do something more drastic with me?"

The aasimar sighed and reached back to shake off the snow clinging to her dark hair. "I simply want to be cautious, you understand.

"So no, I am not sure whether such a thing is likely to happen again but you should know that I serve many powers; some whose identity I am aware of and some I am not. All have guided me along this life's journey but not all of them are benevolent, and in pursuing this mission I feel as if I am in a constant struggle for self. . .for what I know to be right and true.

"My visits to the Mwangi have strengthened both my will and my resolve but as I do not know the full extent of the power arrayed against my unconscious mind, I am determined not to be caught unawares again."
