I know this has not happened yet, but this is the way its going to be. I am going to run an adventure for some characters right here on this board. You guys bring in your own characters (levels 1-2 please) and role play a meet up, however you can put it together.

This is a forgotten realms story, and you all can join. I simply ask that you post some basic info and description here. If there is something you want to keep secret about your character, you can send me a private message.

Most combat will be done on a one-on-one basis, I can even get you started with your introductions if you wish, you fighter types. I give you a monster with stats, and you take your character and roll up a fight. You then post how you fare in any particular round. Just remember, the info I give you, your characters do not necessarily know.

I will provide people exp based on how much they roleplay, the quality thereof, as well as how well they write their fights, and basically however else I feel like giving exp. I will try to keep things close, so we don't have any characters who races ahead of the others just because they post more (annie), but it will help.

As far as who you choose, or where you want to play, it is completely up in the air. I really don't even have a plot yet, but I will. I don't think that anyone will get much past level 5, but who knows. If we really like this, it might go even farther.

He has traveled quite far from his homeland of Sossal, in search of something, and he won't go back until he finds what he is looking for.

Okay, so that didn't get anywhere. But I have been told that you guys need some more time to get your characters together, so I will give you until next Sunday Night.

Of course, I was never expecting this to be anything epic. Just something to try, so don't feel the need to put together 13 page back stories (Bigmatt) Razz

If you guys have any questions, feel free to post in this thread. I will get to them when I get to them.

I have done a few forum rp's before, and the only thing I don't like about them is that everyone can really do whatever they want. Spells, weapons, armor, dragon mounts, artifacts, rulers of small kingdoms, people could have near limitless power. With some statistics and the system used, the idea is to spend more time on who the character is, and less on just what they can do. Also weakness and danger are good ways to provide opportunity for character growth, both physically and mentally.

Yeah, don't sweat the stats, they are pretty simple. You can even make them up if you want to, instead of rolling. Just remember that the more powerful the characters, the more powerful the enemies you will have to face. It makes it more exciting. One sided combat is only fun for so long.

Oh, and Matt, if you have a back story, you should send it to me. yeah!

Unassuming would be the way Ian is most often described. Few people ever look twice at him, and he rarely calls attention to himself. Dresses in normal street clothes, wears kind of a long dark blue cloak with sleeves... almost a medieval trenchcoat, but not really. Kind of a cross between a trenchcoat and a bathrobe.... but cooler looking than that would suggest... Small goatee, Short Black hair.

Carries around a polished black walking stick. Plain heavy duty. 3-4' long, if anyone gets a close look at it, they would see small hair line runes carved throughout it. When spells are cast, the runes light up outward from wherever his hand is holding it at the time.

Kiln is a native of the Vast. His clan--inhabitants of Abdarac Stronghold within the Earthfast Mountains--have been fighting the orcs in the region for centuries. Even though the humans have virtually taken over the region, the dwarves still maintain a close watch over everything, making sure the orcs are unable to battle their way back into the area, and that their kin are given rightful due in the trade and decision-making.

The sharpshooter wanders the Vast, keeping watch over his kin, guarding them against dishonorable humans and other groups that believe they have more right in the region than they actually do. He struggles against human pompousness, especially with the number of adventurers that move through thinking themselves far greater than they are. However, whenever possible, he also enjoys the exhilaration of adventure, himself, though he prefers to find a group of individuals more grounded in humility and trust. Beware, any man who chooses to downplay the dwarven role in shaping the Vast, for Kiln is knowledgeable of his race's history there, and he's not against taking exception to it. Naturally, an ale or two will go a long way to buying this dwarf's forgiveness!

Well, it has been decided (mostly by me) about the setting of the start of the campaign. There is a city called Procampur on the north shore of the Sea of Fallen Stars. The city is known for its strict laws, goldsmithing and colored roofs. However, it is in the south part of the Vast, an area that is very frontierlike, having such exports as furs, timber, and lots of mining. I couldn't find any maps of the city, but you can find plenty of maps of the area online. My favorite being here.

From the descriptions of the city I have read, there are four main temples, Torm, Helm, Waukeen (Lliera), and Tymora, but there are some shrines to quite a few other gods in the district.

Also, from what I understand, the dwarven population has grown in recent years, to be about 9% of the population, instead of what it says on the site I provided to you.

Other information will be provided as we get going on Monday.

You... You just pick on someone your own size!

Besides how can you be pompous with 4 hit points.... (of course in choosing his languages I did completly dismiss dwarven due to its lack of magical significance...)

Oh, in case you were wondering, I found a page for all things Procampur. Please only read as deeply as you need to, because I am pretty sure that not all of you have all of this knowledge, but if you are planning on playing a native of the town, or area, it may help flesh things out.

Additionally, I will be posting rules for combat (as Pat talked some sense into me) early next week. I am planning to start the actual role play late next week, maybe Thursday, because there are a few extra things I need to do before we actually start and I have a wedding in Wisconsin to go to tomorrow morning through Sunday. All that told, I am going to extend the deadline of characters until Wednesday the 7th. I expect everyone to have their characters up at that time and also to PM me your proficiencies as well.

You keep saying things like that, and Kiln will simply let whatever enemy reaches the two of us right on by with a slight bow and a "Go get 'im, boys." I'll be back there with you, no doubt, but with an AC 0 and the highest hp total in the bunch, the dwarf still isn't half bad.

I'm just going to have to decide if my character miraculously realizes some ooc information . . . I won't get xp for it, but still might be funny watching an insulting mage get pummeled! Twisted Evil

Yes, but if you reread where you emphasized it, the inference is that you had no meatshield until the paladin showed up; thus, disregarding the dwarf as a viable option for that position (I can only take for granted because he is a sharpshooter, and not melee). The point I was making in the post above: if you think so little of the dwarf just because he'll be back there standing beside you, he'll likely just let the enemy past "with a slight bow and a 'Go get 'im, boys.'"

I'm messing with you, of course . . . but the dwarf would no doubt be insulted to no end! Mad

you nailed it right on the head! Anybody back there with him doesn't count as a meatshield. Anybody gets back that far... we're probably both screwed! Also you only block the lower 60%... they have a clear shot at his head... Wink

Combat Rules

1. We will have a declarative post, where everyone will let me know what your plan is for each round. If you do not post in a sufficient amount of time, it will be assumed you attack with your main melee weapon (or ranged for pat). This time may be subject to change, but as the rounds go, you can even post in your previous round what you want to do in the next if it is simple.

2. I will post in the ooc thread what order people will post for the round. I will also give the statistics for any opponents in play.

3. We post in that order, having rolled what we need to in order to hit or even saving throws for the bad guys. Please put whatever rolls you made in parenthesis somewhere in your post, or even better, in the ooc thread. These can be edited out later, but only after I have them recorded. (I trust you guys, to a point)

4. At the end of combat, I will award Exp in the ooc thread.

Experience

1. Combat exp will be given after every combat.

2. Story and RP bonuses will be given at the time. You may petition for other players to receive RP bonuses, but you may not petition for yourself, for obvious reasons.

3. I will also be following the individual experience tables in the dmg, specifically tables 33 and 34. This is subject to change if characters are leveling too quickly.

4. I will be keeping track of everyone's experience, and will announce when you can level your characters. Some levels may require training, depending on the story line. There are trainers for every class in Procampur, and the pace of the campaign will be adjusted accordingly. Training could require roleplaying, so you have the opportunity for experience during it as well. Don't know how I am going to do this, just giving prior warning in case I demand it.

5. You have 24 hours to post, if you need to post. Try not to involve other people specifically without their consent. Repeated delays will result in minor Exp penalties. I don't know how else to do that, and I don't expect it to be a problem. (once again, so when I do it, you will not be surprised)

PM me any questions you may have, and I will answer publicly in the ooc thread if I believe it is a good thing for everyone to know.

Wrong. The dwarf is small and stocky . . . quite hardily built, in fact. It'd be nothing for him to knock down an unappreciative mage and toss said individual toward the oncoming threat to slow them. Thus using the mage as a meatshield for himself, and, subsequently, being absolutely appreciative of whatever cover the unfortunate spellslinger just provided for him.

Perhaps that's the trick here. The dwarf will accept that the mage refuses to acknowledge him for as a meatshield when the enemy gets close, and instead position himself to use the mage as one instead. Undoubtedly, the mage won't take more than a hit or two away from him, but, sometimes, that's the difference between life and death. The dwarf respects this philosophy a great deal, and will gladly sing a tavern song as a funerary dirge over the mage's blade-riddled body in thanks for the help provided in saving his life--an amazing thing, really, when one realizes the worth in those capable of great help through protection, regardless of whether the enemy exists one hundred feet away or only a couple.
