Hello everyone,
Thanks for letting me in. I promise not to leave too many unsightly stains.
I'm David, a friend of Rachel's. She asked me to come join in here, and so here I am. I've been involved in various forms of RP since I was about 12. I started out playing a free form version of Star Frontiers and played that for many years, such as it was. In 1991, I was introduced to Shadowrun, the pencil & paper game which launched in 1989. I was instantly hooked and am still a fan to this day, even though I no longer have a group around here to sit down with. I also played a little bit of the Hero System, Champions a time or two, a little Cyberpunk 2020, and also the Werewolves, Vampires, & Mage modules of the White Wolf gaming system. Shadowrun has been the one that's always been my greatest interest.
My next RP experience came a few years ago when I got into the MMO Star Wars Galaxies, where I met and made friends with Rachel. I'm a proud, but scarred, survivor of the Combat Upgrade, and a casualty of the NGE. (RIP SWG).
My most recent RP experience was about a year ago, when a mutual friend of Rachel's and mine encouraged me to join him playing Age of Conan. I got involved in a roleplaying guild there, which centered around a small group of Stygians within the Temple that held divergent (and dangerous) beliefs about the God Set.
Never done RP such as it is on this forum, and am looking forward to a new experience. I'm a bit overwhelmed with what's here so far, so I guess it will take some time for me to adjust and work up the nerve to really participate.
That said, with some of the pics posted, thought I'd chime in with:

Welcome! The more the merrier is our motto! Well, not so much a motto as something that is said from time to time... or once in a while... or whatever...
But Welcome none the less!
I also am not involved in the main RP that started this forum (The Champions of the Red Dawn) but do so enjoy reading the posts of email rping and the updates of actual rping. That group also games in person every other Saturday.
Then there are two other groups that we have face2face gaming the world of darkness and the wheel of time.
The In Other Worlds section though is strictly online rping so feel free to join in on that... Ben (Eddick) just started one and the other one was an email one that kinda died off but I posted the emails anyway (maybe it will get going again!?!?!)
So welcome, enjoy and I look forward to getting to know you!

Haven't had a face to face game in so long I've almost forgotten what they're like. Going by what I see on there, you guys use D & D rules, even with the online rpg'ing? Is that right?

Re: The Missing Thread
Hey David, or should I say Edrykk!
Welcome to this auspicious forum!!! We are glad that you could join us here!! My name is Michelle and I am part of the CoRD group as well as the creator of this wondrous place (I'm a little proud of it, if you can't tell). Feel free to join any of the games in the "In Other Worlds" section as they have no ties to over the table games. We have two now (as Holly already mentioned) and plan to have more as soon as we have people willing to run them. Eddick the Steady XIV is my husband and the one running the "Gonna give this a little try-RP" and he can answer any questions that you may have about it. Feel free to also ask me questions but be warned that I have only been gaming for 2 years and will probably ask Ben, or someone else to answer the question for me. You actually sound like you know more about gaming than I do!
It's great to have you along. I hope it doesn't take you to long to get acclimated to the forum style role-playing! It sure is fun!!

Re: The Missing Thread
Thanks for the warm welcome.
To be honest, I feel a bit out of my league here. You guys seem to have more going on than I've had happening in a long time. The last time I was at a face 2 face rp gathering was almost 10 years ago. You guys have a depth that I haven't seen in quite a while. It's very cool. It's going to take me some time to get comfortable with attemtping to take part in things.

Don't worry, we don't bite.
Seriously though, It may look like we are in depth and hardcore RPers, but we are just out to have a good time. We are all helpful and nice, so don't be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand something.
As far as our system goes, we use the 2nd Edition AD&D rules, with a few house rule modifications of course. The guy called Elric aka Matt has been putting them together into a new players hand book. Its not finished, but unfortunately the file is now too big to send via email. It is not that far off from the original that you could not put something together from those materials. We have access to them, and you can download them if you want, but Gwilly has been with us for two years now, and has never read them all the way through and is RPing like a pro.
We like to argue about rules, but the important thing is the story. We make the rules fit the story. There are exceptions to almost any rule, so don't be afraid to just run with it.
Oh, and nice to meet you. I believe the chant goes...
One of us! One of us! One of us! One of us!

It's a relatively laid back group you're dealing with here, friend. No need to feel intimidated by we little folk! (Well, except Ben, he's a tall dude!)
Good to have you aboard!
PS: I'm the evil one, if you believe what these people tell you . . . *sighs*

Re: The Missing Thread
Yeah I'll have to get my hands on some rules, closest I come to knowing anything about D & D is creating characters for Knights of the Old Republic I & II (lol) and don't have any points of reference to work with in the realm of character creation.
As far as being able to send files, WinRar is good for that, can break it into multiple mails & whatnot. I've also got MSN Messenger, and even bit torrent would do the job pretty good.

Re: The Missing Thread
If you need a spot for the basics, this one works well
Jack books is old, but still reliable!
Start with the players handbook for general rules, and if you want to know more about things, you can get into the more specific stuff. We generally don't worry much about movement or encumberance, and we give mages a few extra spells but that's about it.

I'm neither nice, nor helpful and I have been known to bite!
Welcome! We're glad to have you, and I'm very much looking forward to the rp!

Ok, downloaded some stuff from Jack's and thought you might want a bit of a heads up. Jack's stuff is hosted on GEOCITIES. Geocities will be closing before the end of the month. Unless jack port's his site over to webring hosting, his site will no longer exist by the end of the month.

Re: The Missing Thread
That's good to know. I was wondering when it would finally go down.
We have been getting most of our materials from 4shared lately, they have .pdf files of all of the out of print books we use But I figured that page would be at least good to start.

this reminds me of a tale
The Tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo
aurienne@webpixie.com (April Walters)
(chuckle)
The Tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo
by Richard Aronson (aronson@sierratel.com)
...In the early seventies, Ed Whitchurch ran "his game," and one of the participants was Eric Sorenson. Eric plays something like a computer. When he games he methodically considers each possibility before choosing his preferred option. If given time, he will invariably pick the optimal solution. It has been known to take weeks. He is otherwise, in all respects, a superior gamer.
Eric was playing a Neutral Paladin in Ed's game. He was on some lord's lands when the following exchange occurred:
ED: You see a well groomed garden. In the middle, on a small hill, you
see a gazebo.
ERIC: A gazebo? What color is it?
ED: (Pause) It's white, Eric.
ERIC: How far away is it?
ED: About 50 yards.
ERIC: How big is it?
ED: (Pause) It's about 30 ft across, 15 ft high, with a pointed top.
ERIC: I use my sword to detect good on it.
ED: It's not good, Eric. It's a gazebo.
ERIC: (Pause) I call out to it.
ED: It won't answer. It's a gazebo.
ERIC: (Pause) I sheathe my sword and draw my bow and arrows. Does it
respond in any way?
ED: No, Eric, it's a gazebo!
ERIC: I shoot it with my bow (roll to hit). What happened?
ED: There is now a gazebo with an arrow sticking out of it.
ERIC: (Pause) Wasn't it wounded?
ED: OF COURSE NOT, ERIC! IT'S A GAZEBO!
ERIC: (Whimper) But that was a +3 arrow!
ED: It's a gazebo, Eric, a GAZEBO! If you really want to try to
destroy it, you could try to chop it with an axe, I suppose, or you
could try to burn it, but I don't know why anybody would even try.
It's a @#$%!! gazebo!
ERIC: (Long pause. He has no axe or fire spells.) I run away.
ED: (Thoroughly frustrated) It's too late. You've awakened the gazebo.
It catches you and eats you.
ERIC: (Reaching for his dice) Maybe I'll roll up a fire-using mage so
I can avenge my Paladin.
At this point, the increasingly amused fellow party members restored a modicum of order by explaining to Eric what a gazebo is. Thus ends the tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo. It could have been worse; at least the gazebo wasn't on a grassy gnoll.
